A Walking City for the 21st Century

A Walking City for the 21st Century | Avant-garde Art, Design & Rock 'n' Roll | Scoop.it

© Poliedro

In a world where people live more mobile lifestyles than they have for centuries, cities are facing a problem they rarely planned for: their citizens move away. When jobs and resources start to decline, modern cities, such as Detroit, suffer difficult and often wasteful processes of urban contraction. In contrast to this, Manuel Dominguez’s “Very Large Structure,” the result of his thesis project at ETSA Madrid, proposes a nomadic city that can move on caterpillar tracks to locations where work and resources are abundant.

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

Conceptually, there is something to "a walking city for the 21st Century". But aesthetically "Manuel Dominguez's 'Very Large Structure' looks more like anOrwellian 1984 science fiction nightmare.

Red Burns’ NYU program put tech wisdom ahead of tech genius | SiliconBeat

Red Burns’ NYU program put tech wisdom ahead of tech genius | SiliconBeat | Avant-garde Art, Design & Rock 'n' Roll | Scoop.it

I hate it when the first time I hear about an amazing person is when I read her obituary. I suppose it’s a reflection on the limits of my own horizons that I had never heard of Red Burns until I read the New York Times obit about the woman who had an outsized influence on technology, Silicon Valley and the way we all communicate with each other.

Burns, who died last week at 88, was the founder of New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. She was known as the godmother of Silicon Alley, but it’s clear that her work helped shape Silicon Valley innovations in ways that make them more relevant to all of us.

Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

I wish I had known this woman and been part of her program instead of studying environmental design a few blocks away.

The joy of Letraset

The joy of Letraset | Avant-garde Art, Design & Rock 'n' Roll | Scoop.it
Letraset has shifted manufacture to China and France. The thought of those lettering transfer sheets is enough to take you back in time.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

For those who have #Letrasetmemories, using Letraset and other manual graphic design tools were the days. Digital designers have no sense of the challenges we manual masters had to go through. We were manual type setters, type surgeons and folks who knew how to use their hands in ways that only manual artisans can.
