Nowadays, most shops have one or both types of saws; either vertical or horizontal band saw machines. Certain metals require specific saw bands in order to be cut. A vertical band saw is also known as contour saw; it performs with metal removal jobs that save time and material. Both horizontal and vertical band saws have the ability to mitre and can make angled cuts.
A Horizontal band saw is a machine where the blade cuts through the material in a horizontal action, whether twin column or pivot style. On a Vertical band saw, the blade is in a vertical position and the material is to be fed past the blade over a cutting table or the blade is fed through the material.. Horizontal band saws include machines designed specifically for re-sawing lumber and saws intended for precise miter cuts of large metal stock. Horizontal band saws for metal-work pivot the saw into the work piece. Re-sawing machines may use conveyor belt feed systems or move on a rail bed over the stationary stock.
If you are in a production cutting industry, a horizontal band saw is most likely to be used.
Why? Because a horizontal band saw holds and stabilizes the material that you are about to cut. It has a large capacity for cutting material while vertical band saws are often – but not exclusively, smaller machines -most likely for re-sawing process and / or requires less cutting, for example wood working hobbiest’s.
