2013 /PRNewswire/ -- MakerBot, a leader in desktop 3D printing, and Autodesk, a leader in 3D design software, today announced they have signed a definitive agreement to jointly market a combination of 3D design software and 3D printing hardware to engineers, designers, architects, makers, creators, and artists. The agreement will entail the resale of MakerBot® Replicator® 2 Desktop 3D Printers in connection with Autodesk's 123D membership offerings. This collaboration will enable connecting MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printers with the Autodesk 123D family of apps, making the process of realizing a user's 3D design through 3D printing on MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printers even easier than before.

Autodesk has sent out an invite to launch events where it's "unveiling the latest 3D animation software releases", according to a press release and a launch video (above).

We're taking this to mean the launch of Maya 2014, 3ds Max 2014, Softimage 2014, Mudbox 2014 and MotionBuilder 2014 – unless Autodesk has finally decided unite some of the products it's acquired over the years from the likes of Alias (neé Alias|Wavefront), Softimage (previously owned by both Avid and Microsoft), Kaydara and a bunch of ex-Weta 3D artists.

Autodesk continues its investment in Reality Capture; other recent acquisitions include Alice Labs and RealViz. Autodesk defines Reality Capture as the practice of creating digital models of physical objects and spaces using photography, laser scanning, and other technologies.

Allpoint brings several significant pieces of the puzzle to Autodesk, including large-scale 3D scan data registration, an area of significant research focus but little commercial application.
