Why Being on the First Page of Google Is Meaningless | Auto Repair Shop Marketing Help for 2014 | Scoop.it
We hear it every day. ‘I want to be number one on Google.’ Of course you do. Because when your boss does a few searches and doesn’t find you there, you hear about it, right? You probably see that messaging filling your inboxes from inquiring ‘SEO’ companies that promise to ‘make it happen’.

Nice provocative title by Jody Biagini. While the reality is "it means a lot", the ways to get there have totally changed as she correctly explains.

SEO has changed.

The new SEO is good shareable content.

Ed Burckhardt's insight:

Meantime, small businesses continue to have a nightmare with Google Places, or is it Google Plus Local, or is it Google Plus, Or or is it Google Maps, or or is it Zagat Score, now 5 Star Reviews. As much as I like Google, and I am also thankful for all their services, they surely dropped the ball on this one. I wonder if Marissa Meyer know about Yelp's "Filtered Reviews", supposedly due to their "algorithm". I wonder if she knows about the results you get when you Google, Yelp Class Action Lawsuits About 96,500 results (0.39 seconds). On the other hand, why should they care when the real millions come from big corporations. Why bother with small businesses.

40 Fears That Keep SEO's Awake at Night

40 Fears That Keep SEO's Awake at Night | Auto Repair Shop Marketing Help for 2014 | Scoop.it
We asked 40 search marketers their #1 greatest fear that keeps them awake at night. Here's what they had to say.
Ed Burckhardt's insight:

All those telemarketers spamming your phone with "Front Page of Google" offers, you should send them the link to this article, and ask them how they plan to do it. Read what keeps all of us, doing online marketing for clients, sometimes awake at nights. The 40 statements are from true SEO professionals. When organic (natural search results) keep shrinking on the front page of Google, and most other search engines, it's no longer just SEO and "Front Page of Google". Let's face it, in order for all the Googles and Facebooks out there to show profits in the billions every quarter, they have to monetize every inch of the front page. So next time you deal with your SEO, or online marketing person, have a little more patience, he is going out to battle for you. Believe me, it's not easy.

Auto Repair Shop Marketing Help for 2014
Ed Burckhardt's insight:
Multimillion Dollar Companies Spamming?

DemandForce, which is now owned by Intuit (and with Intuit being a Google partner), must be real desperate to grow their client base. I would dare say, they are getting like the (SEO Specialists" from India, spamming everybody. Or, like the telemarketers, that so cleverly have started using robo calls, to bypass the Do Not Call list, and avoid the law. A few of my good clients, have been forwarding to me, the spam emails they received.

Finally today, it bugged me enough to reply to one of them, that spammed one of my clients in Texas. It just so happens that this particular customer, after being with us for over two and a half years, we managed to triple his gross sales volume. Needless to say, he is very thankful for all our online marketing efforts on his behalf, hence the reason for the forwarded email.

My reply, except for mentioning names, went like this;
He forwarded your email (below) to me. After tripling his sales volume for the last two years, he doesn't need any other services at this time.

You make the statement in your email "I work with several auto shops that also work with Ed Burckhardt’s eCommNow." I guess trying to infer that we are partners. If I was to reword that statement, it would say; I am spamming Ed Burckhardt's clients using his name, we have already stolen several of his clients this way.

Besides being unethical, which I know in today's times, ethics have been forgotten, it's really poor salesmanship. I have instructed all my good clients to forward to me, all emails similar to yours, I guess we'll keep on corresponding. Unless of course, by some miracle, you start developing some ethics, and at least, a minor sense of decency.
Good luck with your sales!

Microsoft Invests $15 Million in Foursquare

Microsoft Invests $15 Million in Foursquare | Auto Repair Shop Marketing Help for 2014 | Scoop.it
Microsoft is investing $15 million in Foursquare as part of a licensing deal that will incorporate the location-based app's data into Microsoft's platforms.
Ed Burckhardt's insight:

All along I thought FourSquare would eventually become a great venue for online marketers, and business owners, working in a  Local level. This new partnership with Microsoft will definitely help. Hopefully, some day soon, they will become a strong contender to Yelp for reviews and check-ins. Especially now that Google+ Local keeps getting harder and harder to deal with. It is quite pitiful that Google let Yelp become the behemoth that they have become.
