Megan LeBlanc's curator insight, January 25, 10:48 AM

Social media #fails of companies attract large consumer viewership and attention from the press, causing adverse affects on any company and their brand. Coleman discusses these affects and provides examples of companies who have experienced difficulties on their social media platforms. The examples given throughout the article encourages companies to learn from the mistakes of other companies so that they can avoid similar incidents in the future. The advice given by Coleman is extremely helpful, and forces marketers to think about what they are saying when communicating through social media platforms. Many mistakes have been made by companies through the learning process of social media marketing, often damaging the brand name in the process, American Apparel’s “Hurricane Sandy Sale” is a prime example. Several articles have been written on the subject of company mishaps, and trends on “my favorite company fail” have developed. Colman suggests you should ask yourself, “what could possibly go wrong with this?” before publishing your post. Asking yourself this question will force you to think of many consumer perspectives, and assist companies to avoid making mistakes on social media.

Better than what automobile dealerships currently use.  Are you dependent on a single source for dealer reviews?

This significantly reduces the dependency on your sales staff.

You only have to look at some of the highest ranking listings to see that Google is now displaying sites like Insider pages next to their Google maps listing. These are reviews left by real customers which can either make or break your reputation.

Google ranks your maps listing based on certain criteria.

Big news for dealerships: Google Places has removed its 3rd party reviews from the first page of Google Maps.

In other words: they no longer aggregate ratings and reviews from other sites and display on the first page. Dealers may find that as of yesterday, the new rating on Google may only be a "1" versus the 400 they had as aggregated from one or more of the rating sites. Aggregated ratings are still available on the web and discreetly located on the 2nd page of Google Maps, but this is a tough break for Dealerships who focus their reputation efforts on driving ratings and reviews only to certain dealer-specific sites. This form of reputation management was a big business model for several vendors who positioned their company as a reputation management solution.

This move from Google confirms the MARKIT Group/WorldDealer approach to online reputation management. Dealers should view their overall reputation as a reputation "pie" which has pieces made up of the various rating and review sites and sources, both on and off the web. This approach allows a holistic, comprehensive strategy which must be reviewed and addressed on an ongoing basis. Google will remain king of search, but attention must be given to where your lead traffic comes from - make sure your reputation individual and online brand score reflects a positive impression.

One Dealer example which used to have 104 ratings from DealerRater, now show one rating.

Google will only count actual Google user ratings on the first search. Very interesting move.
