Once again CPI participated in the annual Good Friend Inc. Aloha Bowling event to raise money for autism awareness. And once again we were the best team . . . okay maybe I’m going a bit too far . . . let’s just say fun was had by all!

I wish for a day when there are more news articles about organizations that have found a way to eliminate the use of restraint and seclusion. I wish there were more reports of individuals and families with positive treatment experiences. I wish there were more requests for success stories than industry failures.

Children do not need to die in restraints.

Would it surprise you to learn that Iris is just three years old? Diagnosed with autism in 2011, Iris speaks little and has difficulty interacting with others. But her artwork helps her express herself. Since starting a variety of therapies, she has come to interact more intimately with her parents and to communicate through vocalizations, signs, and, of course, art.

At eight years old, Tyler has formed a particular attachment to wind chimes—and opened up a whole world.

For several years, the sound of wind chimes has captivated him, sending him into exultations of joy and delight whether he sees them in passing from the car or plays with them in person. His family is happy to see him with such an interest; Tyler has autism, and doesn’t express himself or interact with people that easily.

It’s winter right now, and iced branches jut out of the snow, reaching for the overcast sky. In the distance among the trees, a white fox weaves in and out among the brambles. A crisp wind swirls the hair of students playing in the falling snow.
 
A typical recess? Perhaps. Except the winter landscape is projected on a screen, the wind is regulated, and a snow machine provides the flurries so delighting the kids.
 
Rosehill School in Nottingham, UK might seem unusual at first glance. For one thing, all the students have autism.

Long-time Lego fan Rob Deakin had noticed a certain kind of social awkwardness among the kids—and adults--who attended Lego events. It wasn’t until he started Inside the Brick, his own public Lego club, and talked to the parents that accompanied their kids that he understood how some of these struggles were due to autism.

Oftentimes, people with autism have differences in social interaction and communication, as well as differences in cognitive functioning and processing sensory information. A person with ASD may have difficulty interpreting the meaning of facial expressions, for example, or she may be nonverbal. And when she doesn’t understand you, or doesn’t feel like you understand her, sometimes her behavior can reflect her feelings.
