UK PSA Illustrates Sensory Overload on the Spectrum

UK PSA Illustrates Sensory Overload on the Spectrum | Autism & Special Needs | Scoop.it
Two videos by UK’s National Autistic Society, “Sensory Overload,” and “What Is Autism?”.
Becky B's insight:

“Sensory Overload,” the recent public service announcement (for television) from the UK’s National Autistic Society, dramatically illustrates why sensory stimulation can be so problematic for those on the spectrum: repetitive information that neuro-typical people learn to tune-out, like the sound of a dripping faucet, can quickly become sensory overload for those with autism.

Dr Lorna Wing, OBE 1928 – 2014 | Penumbrage | Autism & Special Needs | Scoop.it
Becky B's insight:

Lorna Wing played a central role in autism research and in setting up the NAS. At that time it was all about parents and children. And following from Kanner’s pioneering work, the children were seen to have a very rare and disabling condition. But Lorna Wing, in partnership with Dr Judith Gould pioneered the concept of an autistic spectrum in which varying degrees of impairment rather an absolute absence of social recipricocity was key to understanding autism.

Autism Multisensory Room Creates Safe Learning Environment

Autism Multisensory Room Creates Safe Learning Environment | Autism & Special Needs | Scoop.it
“Our children don’t learn in the traditional way. Our children learn through their senses.”
Becky B's insight:

It’s winter right now, and iced branches jut out of the snow, reaching for the overcast sky. In the distance among the trees, a white fox weaves in and out among the brambles. A crisp wind swirls the hair of students playing in the falling snow.

A typical recess? Perhaps. Except the winter landscape is projected on a screen, the wind is regulated, and a snow machine provides the flurries so delighting the kids.

Rosehill School in Nottingham, UK might seem unusual at first glance. For one thing, all the students have autism.

ASD & Stopping Bullying With Empathy

ASD & Stopping Bullying With Empathy | Autism & Special Needs | Scoop.it
Social-skills training helps both students on the spectrum and "neurotypical" kids.
Becky B's insight:

Students with autism can miss social cues and sometimes not know that they’re being bullied, so they often benefit from guidance in things like how to interpret facial expressions and body language or how to recognize sarcasm or insincerity.

But what about “neurotypical” kids? An article on EDWeek.org, “Autism Issues Complicate Anti-Bullying Task,” reports that “while social-skills training is commonly a part of the individualized education program, or IEP, for students with autism, such instruction should not be limited just to them.”
