Autism Acceptance
My son, Jacob was diagnosed about 13 years ago way before people knew what the word even meant. We have come a long way and I always try to raise awareness about Autism.

Teen with Asperger's fights back against bullies at Ed-Co | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
16-year-old Hunter Paxson has lived with Asperger's syndrome his entire life. And unfortunately, it's brought a lifetime of bullying.
Holley Jacobs's insight:

Hunter sure seems like a bright, intelligent, imaginative, and brave 16 year old. This story hits home because my son also suffers from bullies and is 15 years old. Hunter's story is inspiring. Take a look and share.

Utah police roll out autism database to better handle special needs

Utah police roll out autism database to better handle special needs | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
The Unified Police Department has rolled out a new program to help them deal appropriately with autistic people, a first of its kind in Utah. On a normal call, officers try to assert dominance to ...
Holley Jacobs's insight:

Amazing and eyebrow at the same time. What will it take for this type of database to be federally mandated? It has been needed for years and I am happy to see people in power realizing that as well.

A normal life with Asperger's

A normal life with Asperger's | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
Asperger syndrome is not a term that comes up regularly in casual conversation. However, it is a condition that needs to be talked about seriously.
Holley Jacobs's insight:

I couldn't have said it any better than he does. Asperger's is not "a death sentence". It is sad to say that there are people out there that do feel that way. I, personally would not have my son any other way. He is who he is. Period.

Orange Public School teacher Anthony Kay honoured for going extra mile

Orange Public School teacher Anthony Kay honoured for going extra mile | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
An Orange teacher was one of four finalists for a Premier’s award recently
Holley Jacobs's insight:

What a great story! I know of teachers who care and those who don't. But, rarely have I found one that is as exceptional as Mr. Kay. It is encouraging to hear about teachers like him.
He goes on to mention how he leaves no surprises for children with Autism by letting know well in advance what is coming up and builds trust, rapport and relationships with them. But the best part is that he says he now incorporates those tactics with neurotypical children as well. Huh, who would have guessed that the ways to help children on the spectrum could have a great impact on those who don't??

Jesse Saperstein shares successes for becoming fearless with Asperger's syndrome

Jesse Saperstein shares successes for becoming fearless with Asperger's syndrome | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
Jesse Saperstein's life can be divided into two parts.
Holley Jacobs's insight:

I LOVED this article. It was inspiring and tear jerking for me to say the least. Jesse is 32 and has written 2 books to help those with Asperger's syndrome. He is a positive influence on young adolescents just entering adulthood that are scared to death like my son, Jacob.
At the same time, Jesse discusses bullying extensively in this article which is where the tears whelmed up. Jacob has been bullied for as long as I can remember and no matter what I have tried to do, nothing has worked. Jesse is right in that there are not any good programs out there to battle this all too common problem.
Has your ever been bullied? What did you do for your child?

My Aspergers Child: Anger-Control Contracts for Frustrated Kids on ... | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
As a parent of a child with Asperger's (AS) or High Functioning Autism (HFA), it's a very good idea to draw up a written contract detailing the things you want your child to practice in the course of his anger-management program.
Holley Jacobs's insight:

A great article with great advice on how to help a child with Asperger's. I have noticed since my son started growing and having hormone changes; he is more angry. This is a great idea and one that should be viewed and passed along.

Holley Jacobs's insight:

What a great ending to a sad story. There are so many adults that I think should be on the spectrum. I mean, seriously, did Autism just appear out of the air in the 90's? No, it didn't and I am happy to see adults getting the right diagnosis.

Teen with Asperger's excels academically

Teen with Asperger's excels academically | Autism Acceptance | Scoop.it
Covington, KY - Teen with Asperger's, David Thomson is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. This news is no surprise to his family and teachers who have seen him excel in school despite being...
Holley Jacobs's insight:

David excels in Math while my Jacob is great with history.  I have noticed that many children on the spectrum are really great at one or two particular subjects. It leaves me perplexed at times as well as frustrated I can admit. I feel like if Jacob can be so good at history, why can't I get him to accomplish other goals? Then, I remember that he is not just be defiant, but that it is part of the syndrome.
Do you know other parents who feel this way?
