john dimitriou's insight:

Asking students to create or identify themselves through an avatar to explain how something works or how it is made allows students to package information in a way that it helps them to unpack knowledge. Becoming personally and emotionally invested helps to engage learners. They take ownership.

john dimitriou's insight:

The notion of effective learning environments whereby the teacher is not transfering knowledge but acting as coach, coordinator or mentor in order for students to help learn from and teach one another (peer instruction/mentoring) appeals to me. Giving your students the permission to do this can be very empowering. Good teachers recognise the importance and effectiveness of learning and teaching simultaneously. If we want our students to value education we also need to give them permission to share in this valued practice.

What Questions Did You Ask Today?

"The average five-year-old asks 65 questions per day, most of them starting with "why." The average 44-year-old manager only asks six questions per day; most of them starting with "when," "where," or "how much."

The number of questions we ask per day doesn't increase until retirement. Why retirement? Because that's when we start asking, "Where are my keys?" and "Why did I walk into this room?"

In this animated three-minute video, Chic Thompson the author of What a Great Idea!, will help you "jump start" your question asking ability."

Blended Learning Innovations: 10 Major Trends

Blended Learning Innovations: 10 Major Trends | Authentic Learning and Innovative Teaching | Scoop.it

"Blended learning is constantly evolving. And most of the innovations and refinements have been developed to support student-centered learning. That means leveraging technology into learning activities, in and out of the classroom.

There is mounting evidence that complementing or replacing lectures with student-centric, technology-enabled active learning strategies and learning guidance—rather than memorization and repetition—improves learning, supports knowledge retention, and raises achievement. These new student-centered blended learning methods inspire engagement, and are a way to connect with every student right where they are while supporting progress toward grade level standards."

How to Reinvent Project Based Learning to Be More Meaningful

How to Reinvent Project Based Learning to Be More Meaningful | Authentic Learning and Innovative Teaching | Scoop.it
Project-based learning continues to be misinterpreted as a single teaching strategy rather than as a set of design principles that allow us to introduce the philosophy of inquiry into education in an intelligent and grounded way. It’s time to not only address the flaws in PBL, but to reinvent it in a way that leads to deeper learning, creative inquiry, and a better fit with a collaborative world in which doing and knowing are one thing.
john dimitriou's insight:

The concept of PBL is now ready to evolve. Enough people have tried worked with it and better understand its successess and failures. Why not get more strategic about it? What better way to broaden those interdisciplinary connections that we know can deepen not only student learning but also our own.
