JKingston's insight:

Franz Boaz was a German immigrant who became the founding father of anthropology in the United States. Anthropology developed differently in France, Britain and the United States. He was carried out study of the cultures of native peoples of Canada and the US.

Boaz was also the founder of a particularist approach to social theory. This means that he was cautious about placing the people which he studied into a grand  expalantion for all of humanity. Instead particularists believe that cultures should be studied and understood on their own terms and according to a specific context. Hence, a particularist would not make a finding for one group of people and attempt to relate it to all people.
