Kids Don't Read Books Because Parents Don't Read Books

Kids Don't Read Books Because Parents Don't Read Books | Australian School Libraries | Scoop.it
There is a cultural narrative about how electronic devices are pulling children away from books. When I meet with other university professors they often tell me that the students don’t read anymore because their eyeballs are glued to their phones. Technophobes think we are raising a generation that doesn’t understand [...]

Elizabeth Hutchinson's curator insight, June 11, 2:45 AM

An interesting article about the power of parent reading. Not only to  and with their but reading themselves. Being a good role model includes demonstrating reading for please.

Dorothy Miller's curator insight, September 8, 10:22 AM

I agree with your observation.   When parents and older siblings sit at the dinner table and can't put their electronic devices down to engage in conversation, there is a great possibility that the small child will not be observed reading a book.  I have had parents bring me their students print books because "They don't use them anymore.  They have a ___ to play electronic games and read e-books.  Our teachers are demanding that our school pay for subscription e-books so the children can read them at home.  Some of these subscription sites read the book to the child on the electronic device.  Where is the enjoyment of sitting with a loved grown-up and reading a new or favorite book together?  These children will not have those precious memories.  "Reading aloud is the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading."

“We’re spending so much time touching, pushing, linking, scrolling and jumping through text that when we sit down with a novel, your daily habits of jumping, clicking, linking is just ingrained in you,” said Andrew Dillon, a University of Texas professor who studies reading. “We’re in this new era of information behavior, and we’re beginning to see the consequences of that.”

One of the hallmarks of a leader is taking time to read good books on leadership.  I have suspected that the internet is changing the way that we read - and this article in not encouraging.
