Nope, nope, nope

Nope, nope, nope | Australia: No 'boundless plains to share' | Scoop.it

“It is a good thing that Australia should have earned a reputation for a sensitive understanding of the problems of people in other lands; that we should not come to be regarded as people who are detached from the miseries of the world. I know that we will not come to be so regarded, for I believe that there are no people anywhere with warmer hearts and more generous impulses. This appeal, therefore, is at one and the same time a challenge and an opportunity. I am confident that we will make a contribution which will serve as one more proof of our instinctive national and individual understanding and generosity.”

'There Is No Front Door': Rohingya In Australia Reject Abbott's Attack | newmatilda.com | Australia: No 'boundless plains to share' | Scoop.it
Members of the Australian Rohingya community have rejected Tony Abbott’s accusation that others fleeing Burma are refusing to go through ‘the front door’, pointing out the ethnic minority are effectively refugees in their own country, and denied basic rights and documentation by the Burmese government.
The Prime Minister last week ruled out offering assistance to the thousands of Rohingya who have been trapped at sea in recent weeks, as bordering states refused to allow their vessels to land.

Julian Burnside: What sort of country are we? | Australia: No 'boundless plains to share' | Scoop.it
Just as a person's character is judged by their conduct, so a country's character is judged by its conduct. Australia is now judged overseas by its behaviour as cruel and selfish. We treat frightened, innocent people as criminals. It is a profound injustice.
