Augmented-reality-app market is predicted to hit $300M next year
SUMMARY: The economic ecosystem surrounding augmented-reality apps is expected to reach $300 million in 2013, up from $82 million this year, according to Juniper Research. "[T]he primary implications for marketers is that if they're not already considering incorporating augmented reality into a campaign, then they should be," said Juniper principal analyst Windsor Holden. Though copyright, libel and privacy issues may hamper future development, a mixture of advertising, paid downloads and post-download content is expected to bring in $5.2 billion in revenue by 2017.
Retail technology has been exploding in the past decade, with one particular sector making huge strides in the last few years. Augmented reality, or AR, is gaining speed as more and more retailers embrace the concept.
Drive created a unique 4DTV commercial for telecommunications giant eircom, that aired on TV and in cinemas in Ireland, the first time that this technology has been employed on commercials for TV broadcast.
Drive started by building a pixel-perfect UV texture map of the entire set which was then used as a template onto which Drive’s 3D team constructed computer-generated content. All of the camera moves had to be set in stone prior to filming in order to build and render the CG content from the right perspective throughout.
The motion graphics team spent an incredible 1,530 animation hours working on the commercial over 17 days and an additional 4,500 render hours in the studio to create this effect.
Drive CEO Ben Fender explains “The result was a fully mapped and immersive projected environment, which allowed the live actors on set to interact with the projected content in a way that hasn’t been seen before in TV advertising.”
"One future topic in our iPads in high school project is a use of Augmented Reality apps with iPad. Scoopit is a great way to start collecting resources for teachers in this project. I will post some results later on."
