Using Augmented Reality for Contextual Mobile Learning by Jason Haag : Learning Solutions Magazine

Using Augmented Reality for Contextual Mobile Learning by Jason Haag : Learning Solutions Magazine | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it

“Mobile augmented reality provides learning designers and educators with a new opportunity to start thinking more deeply about the mobile learner’s context and situation. AR technologies can take any situation, location, environment, or experience to a whole new level of meaning and understanding. AR is uniquely changing the way people learn with mobile devices.”

Sitzmann found that not only were these games effective, but that how the game was designed and incorporated into the training affected their usefulness.

“[L]earning from simulation games was maximized when trainees actively rather than passively learned work-related competencies during game play, trainees could choose to play as many times as desired, and simulation games were embedded in an instructional program rather than serving as stand-alone instruction,” she wrote in the conclusion.

The ultimate goal for simulation game design teams is to exploit the motivational capacity of simulation games to enhance employees’ work-related skills.

The analysis examined the outcomes of 55 different studies that explored the impact of simulation games on professional training. The full study was published in the Summer 2011 edition of Personnel Psychology.

Open Letter to LEGO: LEGO Universe v. Minecraft Lessons Learned | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it

I was gobsmacked when I read the article "LEGO Minecraft is Coming" posted on Wired. Why would LEGO create a model of the game that economically pwnd LEGO Universe, its first MMOG? Thinking more about it, the irony of this odd business decision actually helped to illuminate something that has been perplexing me for past year. What is it, exactly, that makes Minecraft so massively successful?

Söderhavet’s redesign of Sweden’s digital identity is not the first time that we’ve worked on a nation-branding project. Back in May 2007 we helped build Second House of Sweden, Sweden’s embassy in the virtual world of Second Life.

That project proved to be a remarkable PR coup for Sweden, with major global news outlets covering the inauguration of the embassy by Sweden’s foreign minister Carl Bildt.

He also hopes Minecraft can teach parents a thing or two rather than them wanting the game to teach their kids.

Second Life Founder, Philip Rosedale, Is Quietly Creating a Next-Generation Virtual World

Second Life Founder, Philip Rosedale, Is Quietly Creating a Next-Generation Virtual World | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
In Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, humanity escapes a gritty dystopia by donning VR goggles and entering a virtual world called OASIS. Back here in a comparatively rosy 2013, we don’t have a fully immersive virtual experience—yet.

But virtual reality is undergoing a renaissance. And while Oculus develops a consumer-ready virtual reality headset, Second Life creator, Philip Rosedale, and his latest startup, High Fidelity, are hard at work constructing a next-generation global virtual world.

High Fidelity was quietly launched earlier this year with funding from Second Life’s Linden Lab, Google Ventures, Kapor Capital, and True Ventures. To date, the firm has largely kept itself out of the spotlight. Search “high fidelity” and prepare yourself for a barrage of John Cusack. Add virtual, however, and you’re there.

Most people who interact with AR for the first time have a mind-blowing experience but fail to consider classroom applications. In our elementary school classrooms, we use AR to create active learning experiences hitherto inconceivable, and in the process redefine the learning space!

Will Google Glass Usher Augmented Reality into the Classroom?

Will Google Glass Usher Augmented Reality into the Classroom? | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Schools are taking notice of the buzz surrounding Google's wearable tech gadget.

Google Glass may just represent the future of AR in the classroom. But do today's educators see it that way?

According to Bill Bass, innovation coordinator for instructional technology, information and library media at Parkway School District in Chesterfield, Mo., most of them are still figuring it out and using it sparingly. He recently helped teachers use the AR platform Aurasma to bring the Constitution to life. Amendments were projected onto a wall, and as students approached each one, they could watch a related video created by their classmates.

Excellent Videos OnThe Use of Augmented Reality Apps by Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Excellent Videos OnThe Use of Augmented Reality Apps by Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it

"Below are some good videos I got a few days ago on examples of how some augmented reality apps are being used with kids to help them improve their learning. If the concept of augmented reality if all new to you then here is a brief definition of it: Augmented Reality is exactly what the name implies: an augmented version of realty created by mixing technology with the known world. It might be a distorted, augmented, or less augmented version of the actual world but in its basic form, augmented reality is a simulation or rather a way of superimposing digital contents into the real context."
