Virtual labs have done a decent job of introducing students to scientific work and allowing them to simulate experiments in the absence of a physical lab. However, a faculty member at Stony Brook University said she believes virtual labs could do more, and she intends to apply gamification to find out whether its use could expand how science is practiced online.

M. Ete Chan, an assistant professor in the department of Biomedical Engineering, recently received a grant from her institution to research a project she's calling, "Lab-in-a-Cube." The problem Chan identified was that while virtual science labs look realistic, they still lack some "crucial" aspects: "tactile skills, decision-making for preparation and execution of the lab." For example, the process of "pipetting up and dispensing an accurate volume of chemicals without introducing unnecessary air bubbles cannot be practiced online currently," she noted in a proposal about the project. Likewise, virtual labs rely too much on "computer mouse clicking" or simple choices.

Daejeon, Republic of Korea, July 29, 2016--With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) era, strong demand has grown for wearable and transparent displays that can be applied to various fields such as augmented reality (AR) and skin-like thin flexible devices. However, previous flexible transparent displays have posed real challenges to overcome, which are, among others, poor transparency and low electrical performance. To improve the transparency and performance, past research efforts have tried to use inorganic-based electronics, but the fundamental thermal instabilities of plastic substrates have hampered the high temperature process, an essential step necessary for the fabrication of high performance electronic devices.

Several years ago, I made one of those foolish Dad choices. Despite my wife’s better judgement, I let my six- and seven-year-old sons watch Men in Black. What I thought would be a cool evening of fighting aliens turned into one of those nights ending with two kids afraid of going to sleep under a wife’s “I told you so” glare.

Miraculously, I stumbled onto a solution when my elder son came into our bedroom around midnight saying he kept waking up scared because he was afraid a giant bugman would get him. In the moment, a solution arose. I told my son that I kept special, super strong anti-bugman powder in the bathroom, so strong it could only be used in emergencies, but that it could keep bug monsters out of the house. With that, I went into the bathroom, filled a small plastic bag with talcum powder, and spent the next thirty minutes walking around the house throwing the powder about the place while chanting “Go away bugmen!” with my son. He slept the rest of the night.

Calling his project the "stuff of science fiction," director of the 3D Visualisation Aesthetics Lab at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) John McGhee is letting people come face-to-face with a breast cancer cell.

Using data pulled from a high-resolution electron-microscope at the University of Queensland, the expert in CGI has recreated the cancer cell in virtual reality.

I’m not sure about you, but watching my neighborhood—OK, the entire world—become obsessed with the augmented reality (AR) game Pokémon Go, I knew I had better do some serious research into AR’s implications and applications.

VIRTUAL VS. AUGMENTED

Sportvision
Unlike virtual reality, which offers the user a 360-degree view of an artificial world, augmented reality superimposes an image, video or some other digital overlay onto our view of the real world in real time. For example, AR has long been used in Sportvision to project the first down marker in football. It’s not actually on the field, but it is on viewers’ screens. You’ll see other examples in the Olympic games, when commentators project images over the screen to show a diver’s or racer’s speed or form.

Magic Leap
Since AR enhances the information we can perceive with our senses, like a virtual dinosaur sprouting out of text on the Mesozoic Era, it often immerses users into the experience in a way that makes learning more meaningful. It can be exciting, such as Magic Leap’s elephant in your hands, or perhaps even quite distracting, as Pokémon GO players walk into lakes, fall off cliffs, or even drive into police cars.

We have all been talking about games and gamification, virtual reality and the Internet of Things (IoT) for years. Pokémon Go has taken the next big step, linking augmented reality and the Internet of Virtual Things… don’t bother looking for the IoVT on Wikipedia; you read it here first.  

This new concept takes the IoT and lets you put virtual things into it, without having to go through all the complicated and expensive business of actually creating a physical thing and connecting it to the Internet; you don’t even have to make the thing, beyond an image. It is the ultimate mash-up.

You can take the technological building blocks – GPS, geolocation mapping, pervasive connectivity, cameras, audio – that are found on any smartphone, and use them for your training.
