Philip Rosedale's Presentation for University of Ottawa Symposium

What is High Fidelity & Where are we heading?

Second Life founder and former CEO Phillip Rosedale founded High Fidelity in 2013, with partners Ryan Downe and Freidrica Heiberger. The company was formed to create a next-generation social virtual reality platform. High Fidelity provides a platform for users to create, deploy and explore virtual worlds and ways in which we can interact within them. The software is free and open source, and currently supports the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive devices. Phillip Rosedale will showcase this incredible networked VR environment and speak to the educational potential such an immersive, collaborative and engaging environment it can foster.

Virtual and Augmented Reality in Higher Education

This year’s theme will explore the overall values virtual and augmented reality bring to teaching, learning and research through an exploration of how we are currently using this immersive technology across a number of academic disciplines, both within the University of Ottawa and elsewhere.

While we have had Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in various stages of development for the last 40 years, it is only over the last two years that we have witnessed a profound growth in the development of this exciting immersive media technology. A core set of recent technical breakthroughs have unleashed a huge increase in both Virtual and Augmented Reality (AR) devices and software advances. It has been suggested that VR and AR technologies will likely generate revenues of up to $150 billion by the year 2020.

There is hardly an industry today that has not been touched by emerging VR and AR technologies: gaming, entertainment, advertising, film, manufacturing and health care to name a few, have all begun to explore the vast potential of this transformative media technology.

Does Whisky Taste Better in Virtual Reality?

Does Whisky Taste Better in Virtual Reality? | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
There is no denying that virtual reality (VR) has a certain wow (or eww) factor when done right.

In April 2016, the world glimpsed the amazing possibilities of VR when they witnessed surgeons at the Royal London NHS perform open surgery on a 70-year-old cancer patient. Doctors and medical students from across the globe experienced the operation in real time, with 360-degree control over their vantage points, and actually felt the resistance when the surgeon’s scalpel cut through the muscle.

Most workplace VR applications, however, are nowhere as exciting—think virtual conferencing—but hold much promise of the potential reach and practicality of VR in the near future.

360 Video Spotlight: Museum of Natural History Virtual Reality - Class Tech Tips

360 Video Spotlight: Museum of Natural History Virtual Reality - Class Tech Tips | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Last week I introduced a new Thursday series of Facebook posts and blog posts all about 360 video. Today I want to spotlight a great resource for finding and sharing 360 video and a super cool video you may want to share with students. Vimeo is a popular video sharing tool, especially in schools that have blocked YouTube. Not only is this a great resource for finding high-quality video, Vimeo now gives users access to 360 video content.

360 Video Spotlight: Museum of Natural History Virtual Reality
So what does Vimeo have to do with the Museum of Natural History? Well Vimeo lets users upload and share their own 360 video content and they also give this option to organizations who have videos to share. The Museum of Natural History has created an impressive 360 video titled, “Fossil Hunters of the Gobi.” This 360 video was created using archived footage layered onto a 360 canvas to show off one of the expeditions that helped gather artifacts for the Museum of Natural History.

New location-aware “knowledge injections” or annotations on the EON Reality Augmented Virtual Reality platform provide contextual knowledge in real time, helping users to facilitate a manufacturing, maintenance, repair or operation procedure, and other real-world applications.

The EON AR Knowledge Injection functionality taps EON Reality’s artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and geopositional tracking technologies to allow users to create AR annotations, such as text, video and voice, linked to the physical world. Alternatively, users can integrate objects from the EON AVR library, from subjects like chemistry or physics. The functionality works with normal tablets and smartphones, or the 3D scanning capability of more sophisticated devices like Google Tango or HoloLens, according to a company statement.

Cool Jobs: Doing real science in virtual worlds

Cool Jobs: Doing real science in virtual worlds | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Strap on a virtual reality headset and you’ll enter a different world. Without leaving your house, you can fly a spaceship through a make-believe galaxy. You can play pool with friends. Or you can perform surgery on an alien.

Virtual reality, or VR, uses special technology to trick the brain into thinking these experiences are real. A technique called stereoscopy (STAIR-ee-OSS-kuh-pee) sends a slightly different image to each eye. This can create the illusion of depth. It certainly makes video games feel more realistic. But VR isn’t just for fun. It also can help scientists do their research or share it with others.

Scientists are using VR to learn more about people and the planet. One engineer uses this technology to let kids build mountains and carve out rivers with their bare hands. A scientist who studies language puts people in a virtual restaurant to learn what happens in their brains as they converse. A doctor takes patients on a virtual field trip to swim with dolphins. The worlds they visit are not real, but the science is.

Health advocates are always trying to find ways to make their campaigns more impactful and improve their outcomes, but this can be a big challenge. Helping people change their personal behavior, especially when it comes to reducing health risks, is one of the biggest challenges in the medical community. Enter virtual reality! New innovations are always happening in VR and many are already being studied as we speak. Not long ago, we covered research that showed how VR can help people better connect with health risks. Another study takes that one step further and shows how VR can make people connect with advocacy campaigns and make significant changes on their own lives as a result.
