Curtin University opens advanced driving simulator for road safety research | CarAdvice | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Western Australia’s Curtin University has unveiled one of the most advanced driving simulators in the southern hemisphere.

Housed at the university’s Technology Park campus, six kilometres from the Perth CBD, the CKAS Mechatronics simulator’s installation is the product of the collaboration between Curtin University and independent road research body, ARRB Group.

Officially launched by Deputy Premier and Minister for road safety in WA, Liza Harvey, the university says the simulator will enable the Curtin-Monash Accident Research Centre (C-MARC) and ARRB to undertake “highly sophisticated driver behaviour and road infrastructure research” by recreating the forces, loads, sounds and feel of real-world driving.

One step closer to reality: introducing 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio on YouTube

Starting today, we’re also launching spatial audio for on-demand YouTube videos. Just as watching a concert in 360 degrees can give you an unmatched immersive experience, spatial audio allows you to listen along as you do in real life, where depth, distance and intensity all play a role. Try out this playlist on your Android device.

To make sure all creators can tell awesome stories with virtual reality, we’ve been working with companies across the industry. We’re working with companies like VideoStitch and Two Big Ears to make their software compatible with 360-degree live streams or spatial audio on YouTube and more will be available soon. We’ll also make 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio technologies available at all YouTube Space locations around the globe, so you can take it for a spin.

Build It Scotland – Museum Minecraft Event – ImmersiveMind | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Over the last five months, I’ve been working with the BBC on an initiative called Build It Scotland. A project designed to give children across Scotland the opportunity to explore their local and national history through the man-made structures around them and then recreate it in Minecraft on the PC/Mac, tablets or Raspberry Pi, and also using TinkerCAD. Each childs work will be showcased on a BBC Minecraft gallery map, accessible to the public, and one version of each building made will also be featured on a publicly available Minecraft map of Scotland. A flat, caricature map of the entire country, on which the structures will be placed on location, so anyone can fly over the world and view them. The maps are planned for launch in May 2016, with a population period of May to October 2016.

Live Texturing of Augmented Reality Characters from Colored Drawings

Coloring books capture the imagination of children and provide them with one of their earliest opportunities for creative expression. However, given the proliferation and popularity of digital devices, real-world activities like coloring can seem unexciting, and children become less engaged in them. Augmented reality holds unique potential to impact this situation by providing a bridge between real-world activities and digital enhancements. In this paper, we present an augmented reality coloring book App in which children color characters in a printed coloring book and inspect their work using a mobile device. The drawing is detected and tracked, and the video stream is augmented with an animated 3-D version of the character that is textured according to the child’s coloring. This is possible thanks to several novel technical contributions. We present a texturing process that applies the captured texture from a 2-D colored drawing to both the visible and occluded regions of a 3-D character in real time. We develop a deformable surface tracking method designed for colored drawings that uses a new outlier rejection algorithm for real-time tracking and surface deformation recovery. We present a content creation pipeline to efficiently create the 2-D and 3-D content. And, finally, we validate our work with two user studies that examine the quality of our texturing algorithm and the overall App experience.

The virtual reality successor to Second Life will open to 3D artists this summer

The virtual reality successor to Second Life will open to 3D artists this summer | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Second Life creator Linden Lab is letting a few more people into its mysterious new virtual reality operation. Today, Linden Lab announced that it's taking applications for a preview of Project Sansar, a VR-creation platform that it first announced last year. If you're a 3D artist or modeler, you can put your name down for a "Creator Preview" that will open this summer. We don't know exactly how high the chances are of getting in, but a Linden Lab spokesperson says that "hundreds" of creators should be invited on a rolling basis before the platform is opened up — however long that is.

Though we know practically nothing about it, Sansar is supposed to be a place for people to "create, share, and ultimately monetize their own interactive social experiences" — it's previously been compared to "WordPress for VR." A handful of testers were invited onto the platform last year, and we got a very early look at what they might be making a couple of months ago, in the form of two screenshots showcasing environments like a movie theater and the surface of Mars.

The Minecraft Generation | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it

How a clunky Swedish computer game is teaching
millions of children to master the digital world.

Since its release seven years ago, Minecraft has become a global sensation, captivating a generation of children. There are over 100 million registered players, and it’s now the third-best-selling video game in history, after Tetris and Wii Sports. In 2014, Microsoft bought Minecraft — and Mojang, the Swedish game studio behind it — for $2.5 billion.

There have been blockbuster games before, of course. But as Jordan’s experience suggests — and as parents peering over their children’s shoulders sense — Minecraft is a different sort of phenomenon.
