Why Virtual Reality is the Saving Grace of Education

Why Virtual Reality is the Saving Grace of Education | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
With VR there is no coasting option of just sitting and listening. Students have to interpret and examine, in real time, the subject matter that is portrayed in front of them. In this way, VR is helping educators recapture class interest, boosting their efforts in the process.

Mira Debuts Augmented Reality Headset for iPhone, iPad at $99 -- Campus Technology

Mira Debuts Augmented Reality Headset for iPhone, iPad at $99 -- Campus Technology | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Mobile augmented reality (AR) startup Mira earlier this week unveiled an untethered AR headset for iOS.

The new Prism headset — available for pre-order at $99 with an MSRP of $149 — aims to be an affordable option “to deliver premium and shareable AR experiences to the masses,” according to a company statement.

It’s essentially a shell headset without any tech installed; similar to Google’s Daydream View headset for virtual reality, it only requires a smartphone or tablet to get started. Once an iPhone (6, 6s or 7) or iPad has been secured facing away from the user and Prism is paired with the Mira app, users can view objects rendered in stereoscopic 3D on the transparent visor. Prism also comes with a remote controller that enables users to interact with the AR objects via touchpad, trigger and two buttons.

Virtual Reality and Learning: The Newest Landscape for Higher Education

Virtual Reality and Learning: The Newest Landscape for Higher Education | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Classrooms and lectures allow students to engage with their professors, teaching assistants and with each other. Students have the ability to raise their hand to get clarification in the moment, when it is most useful, rather than having to send an email and await a reply. Students can be broken up into work-groups for projects; and potentially most important of all, students can turn to other students and ask them questions, make study-groups and form friendships and rivalries that provide emotional motivation for pushing themselves to learn more and succeed. The highest quality education must be social and interactive, and although online learning provides a degree of that via a website, the practicality of the real world instant feedback and social dynamics are missing.

3 Free Virtual and Augmented Reality Apps for the Classroom

3 Free Virtual and Augmented Reality Apps for the Classroom | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have never been more accessible for teachers and students. Of course, the technology isn’t perfect yet, and the content offerings can be hit or miss. But, considering how many students carry smartphones, and with cardboard-style VR viewers starting at about $15, it’s easier than ever to give kids immersive VR and AR experiences in class.
