Could Minecraft be the next great engineering school?

Could Minecraft be the next great engineering school? | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
On the Boulevard Saint-Michel, near the center of Paris, just off the edge of the Jardin du Luxembourg and just a short stroll from the Sorbonne sits the main campus of the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris.

The new, new MOOC

Minecraft has become a kind of anarchic massive open online course (MOOC) all on its own, without developing courseware or costly new program licenses. Part of the proliferation is due to user-created video, particularly on YouTube, where a quick search yields 7.5 million mentions. Video podcasts, recordings of building in progress and most importantly, walkthroughs, or videos of players demonstrating how to master levels or particular construction techniques, keep the global Minecraft horde digging and trying to impress or teach one another, forming a key part of the informal player-to-player education that makes the game a fascinating phenomenon to observe.
Kim Flintoff's insight:

MInecraft seems to have fired the imaginations of educators across many disciplines not only in K-12 but into higher education.

Philip Rosedale on His Plan to Protect IP Rights of High Fidelity Users Through Blockchain Registration

Philip Rosedale on His Plan to Protect IP Rights of High Fidelity Users Through Blockchain Registration | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Right after announcing High Fidelity's plans to mint the virtual world's own blockchain-based currency last week, CEO Philip Rosedale announced equally ambitious plans to protect the IP rights of user-created virtual goods in HiFi through blockchain technology:

When someone buys your sunglasses from you, you create a digital certificate (basically a proof-of-purchase) that officially states that they now own a pair of your sunglasses. Minimally, this certificate points back to the original registered asset, is signed by you as the creator, and is also stored in the public blockchain with a key that can be used by the new owner to prove that they own it (or to re-sell it to someone else). So there are now two ‘official’ documents in the blockchain — the registration of the original design for the asset, and the certificate proving that a copy of it is owner by the buyer.

Project Axon is a VR game that shows how fake news spreads

Project Axon is a VR game that shows how fake news spreads | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
If you’ve been online, you’ve seen fake news. A team of graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University created a virtual reality game called Project Axon to raise awareness about how our own behavior on social media platforms can contribute to this problem.

The team hails from the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU, a two-year master’s program that focuses on interactive entertainment. It works closely each year with Games for Change on projects tackling social issues for its annual festival.

Dave Culyba, an assistant teaching professor at Carnegie Mellion’s ETC, oversaw the project. In a phone interview with GamesBeat, he said that Games for Change asked them to create a group game involving VR that deals emotions and neuroscience. The team decided to dive into fake news.

Why Museums Should Dive Into VR - DML Central

Last October, we created a broad-based, virtual reality strategy that was built on top of a mobile app. The goal of both was to push what museums were doing in both of those spaces, to start to think about mobile technologies, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, including things that the public has not adopted broadly, and ask: How can museums be part of that?

The immersive learning experience uses VR to let young participants pedal a stationary bike through their drawings and clay figures.

Remember when arts and crafts meant some glue sticks and a handful of dry macaroni? Ah yes, it was a simpler time that the children of today will unfortunately never fully understand. Especially when you have digital technology groups such as Play Lab dedicated to bringing technology into younger and younger classrooms. Since its initial creation January of this year the company has been developing all types of projects focused on VR & AR learning. However their newest program may be their most ambitious yet.

Educators sour on virtual worlds –

Educators sour on virtual worlds – | Augmented, Alternate and Virtual Realities in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Educators are souring on virtual worlds, as evidenced by declining participation in online forums, in virtual conference attendances and education-related destinations on the Second Life grid.

For example, Second Life Educators, the forum for educational organizations and educational use of Second Life, shows a dramatic decline in the number of messages over the past decade.
Kim Flintoff's insight:
As a result, the use of virtual environments like Second Life seems to be in decline.

“Educators still using the environment appear to be those who are comfortable with the environment,” said Kevin Feenan, the founder of the Rockcliffe University Consortium. “What you see now is more selective and targeted use by a smaller sub-set of the educational community.”
