Apple's iPad 3 launch targets the television revolution

Apple's iPad 3 launch targets the television revolution | Audiovisual Interaction | Scoop.it
Wednesday's iPad 3 launch had a wider purpose than introducing an upgraded tablet. It was Apple's most coherent effort yet to bind its family of screens closer together, in a way that prepares the ground for the world's largest technology company to disrupt the world's most important entertainment medium – broadcasting.

Tim Cook introduced his concept of the "post PC era". With growing numbers of tablet computers and smartphones, the humble desktop computer is no longer the centre of our digital world. All our screens have become computers, and that revolution is coming to the television set.

How Ipad & Tablets Will Soon Top TVs For Most Video Viewing

How Ipad & Tablets Will Soon Top TVs For Most Video Viewing | Audiovisual Interaction | Scoop.it

The focus on the tablet as a co-viewing device is wrongheaded. In fact, I believe the tablet is about to revolutionize on-demand video viewing, as it supplants the big-screen TV for a very large fraction of primary video viewing.

63% of people watching TV on a tablet do so even though similar or the same content was easily accessible on a big-screen TV in the same place.

Big screen TVs will more and more be used for tentpole, live viewing – for the types of programming that must be consumed live, including sporting events, awards shows, election and disaster coverage. During these (relatively) few and far-between video events, our tablets will become co-viewing screens, allowing us to comment, rate, and share the experience with others – or to look away when the action wanes.

Megaupload Shutdown Boosted TV and VOD Services

Megaupload Shutdown Boosted TV and VOD Services | Audiovisual Interaction | Scoop.it

The French government agency responsible for administering the country's '3 strikes' anti-piracy scheme is reporting that online TV and other VOD services have received a boost following the shutdown of Megaupload.

..

Megaupload’s Megavideo was one of France’s most popular Internet video services. In December 2011, Megavideo ranked 9th behind market leaders YouTube and big names such as Daily Motion, Canal + and Vimeo, pulling in nearly 3 million visitors.

..

Hadopi says the data shows that overall the VOD, catchup TV and aggregator platforms enjoyed a significant 25.7% growth when compared to the weeks immediately prior to Megaupload closure.

Ed.Note - Lets now make things easy for the end-user. Not all can be solved by fighting piracy: it'll come back in an other way. We need to provide them simple, fast and easy-to-use services... Go and browse the VOD catalog of an IPTV service and you'll understand what I mean. Even iTunes is impressively awkward.
