3 Tips for Using Social Media Compliantly in Healthcare Marketing | Audiology Marketing | Scoop.it

Apps are changing the face of health care, and that's exactly why a number of groups are keeping close eye on them. Just how does the FDA regulate apps?

OMP Digital's curator insight, April 3, 2013 4:35 AM

In our healthcare system in teh UK, We may have not been perscribed a healthcare app, but we soon may do. The mHealth apps out there can collect behavioural change, drug usage, heart rate monitors, mental health moods and IM expanding the reach for the clinic. This is now why mHealth has come under the microscope by public and private regulatory groups. It seems clear that the industry of federal government is imminent.

If we take the DiabetesManager, a prescription-app fromWellDoc. The app first tracks and collects information from the patient, a clinical recommendation is then sent to the physician giving real time feedback to the patient. There is a hefty $100 price tag for the app, however health insurance companies are deeming them coverable as they are regulated.

Following on from this The Health Care Blog ask How Should Apps Be Prescribed?

These developments beg the question: Just how do you regulate a mobile app?

The FDA just held three days of discussion on this very topic. In so doing, they mostly determined what wouldn't be regulated. For example, tablets and smartphones will not be considered medical devices just because they can run prescription apps, app stores and developers will not be considered medical device manufacturers, and apps will not be forced to seek re-approval for small updates. Moreover, any apps that contribute to Electronic Health Records or act as personal health monitors will not be regulated.

Marie Ennis-O'Connor's curator insight, December 12, 2012 7:06 AM

Participating in social media is bound to uncover some weaknesses in your organization. Maybe your admitting staff is consistently disrespectful to patients, or perhaps waiting times are abnormally high due to inefficient workflows. Patients seek this type of information so they can manage their expectations while healthcare organizations relish the opportunity to know what areas need improvement. Negativity can be interpreted as an unfiltered look into your facility and help to more effectively identify areas of improvement that need immediate solutions for the good of everyone.
