Steve Robinson - Ancestry Author: Nervous about narrator choice by Brilliant

Steve Robinson - Ancestry Author: Nervous about narrator choice by Brilliant | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Byron Wagner's insight:

"Something else has got me excited this week.  I received an email from the author relations manager at Amazon to say that production was soon to begin with Brilliance Audio on the audiobooks for my series.  Now, as well as being excited about this, I'm also a little scared.

No, maybe scared is too strong.  I'm nervous, that's it.  The main reason for this is that my books are written with a British English narrative, they're predominantly set in England, and the majority of the characters are English.  But Jefferson Tayte is the lead character and of course he's an American.  My worry is that JT's voice won't sound right, because I feel that the narrator needs to be a Brit (for all the reasons above), rather than an American.  I'm sure I'm worrying about nothing though as that's what voice actors do - accents.  I did suggest Hugh Laurie (with tongue in cheek) as he's a Brit who has managed to speak as a convincing American, but I think he's probably outside the budget."

Fight for unabridged audio rights | The Bookseller

Fight for unabridged audio rights | The Bookseller | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it

Unabridged audio rights are said to have become a “battleground”, as dedicated audio companies such as Amazon-owned Audible increasingly look to sign rights directly from agents.

Byron Wagner's insight:

Agents meanwhile say they are looking to place audio rights where they can be fully exploited, even if that means bypassing traditional publishers.

Alice Lutyens, audio manager at Curtis Brown, said that selling to dedicated audio publishers produced the best results for authors. “The policy at Curtis Brown is to not grant audio rights to publishers in the head contract, and instead focus on selling the audio rights to independent audio publishers, such as Audible, W F Howes, Bolinda and AudioGo,” Lutyens said.

“We often go to auction, with very strong results [bids] from the audio publishers. Currently it is the best route for the author because the royalties are usually higher,” she said. “Audiobooks are their speciality, and they know exactly where and how to produce and market them.”

The 25-Hour Audiobook Marathon To Honor Bob Deyan | NBC Southern California

The 25-Hour Audiobook Marathon To Honor Bob Deyan | NBC Southern California | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it

"While many audiobook buffs have had marathon listens over long car rides -- think seven or eight hours -- surely nothing can top The 25-Hour Audiobook Marathon..."

Byron Wagner's insight:

Book lovers are a passionate bunch, no doubt. Not only are favorite series and tomes regularly recommended, but scenes are parsed, moving sentences recalled, and characters spoken of as if they were family or foe.

Audiobooks, too, inspire such reactions, but with a twist. Regular users think of the narrator as a friend, a warm-voiced presence in their car or home or earbuds. It adds a new dimension to how we take in a tale.

And while many audiobook buffs have had marathon listens over long car rides -- think seven or eight hours -- surely nothing can topThe 25-Hour Audiobook Marathon, for sheer audacious length-a-tude. Nope, it isn't a single reader reading aloud over a day plus an hour, but a whole line-up of popular local narrators doing their dulcet-toned thing.

The marathon is set for Saturday Nov. 9 to Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Victory Theatre in Burbank. Start time is 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, meaning the end time is 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

That's a lot of words. But every one of 'em will come with feeling: It's a fundraiser for Bob Deyan, a longtime audiobooker, and the ALS Association. Mr. Deyan has been diagnosed with ALS.

And the narrators who'll be out supporting Mr. Deyan? They include Scott Brick, Renee Raudman, Tom Kelly, and Vanessa Hart, as well as a few celebrity guests (hi, Marion Ross of "Happy Days").

If you can't decide where to jump in during the 25 hours, check it out: Various times of day are tied to various genres. So of course "Thriller/Mystery" hits near the witching hour, at 10 p.m. on Saturday night. Romance swoons at noon on Sunday. A dozen genres will be represented in all.

A ticket to each specific genre read is $15, though the opener -- Children's Lit -- is $10.

Several interested parties are understood to have made bids for audiobook publisher and retailer AudioGO. The company suspended its business operations earlier this week due to "recently discovered significant financial challenges".

Blackstone Audio Buys AudioGo U.S. Arm

Blackstone Audio Buys AudioGo U.S. Arm | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
After being acquired by U.K-based AudioGo at the end of 2012, Blackstone Audio has turned around and bought all the U.S. assets of AudioGo in a move that effectively ends the nine-month merger.
Byron Wagner's insight:

The unwinding of the deal was largely due to problems in the U.K.-side of the business.

The U.K. trade publication The Bookseller reported that the U.K. division has suspended operations due to "financial challenges" while it looks for an investment or a sale. According to Josh Stanton, president and CEO of Blackstone Audio, the U.S. arm of AudioGo has been profitable. Since the December 2012 merger, Stanton, who had been responsible for the combined North American Blackstone-AudioGo business, had been overseeing the integration of the two companies, a process that included the downsizing of its North Kingstown, R.I. office.

Stanton said that with the new deal, he expects to retain a recording studio in Rhode Island and a New York City office in addition to the Blackstone headquarters in Ashland, Ore. The purchase includes all AudioGo brands and will bring the Blackstone audiobook catalogue to about 9,000 titles.

The Bookseller
Audiobook publisher AudioGO has put its business operations on hold due to "recently discovered significant financial challenges".
Byron Wagner's insight:

Rachel Josephson, AudioGO's head of marketing and sales, told The Bookseller: "I can confirm that AudioGO has temporarily suspended business operations whilst we seek an investment or a sale of the business."

She added: "There is a considerable amount of interest in AudioGO and we are hopeful of achieving a swift resolution. Protecting and respecting the rights of everyone that we work with is uppermost in our considerations and we are grateful for the fantastic support we have received from our colleagues throughout the industry."

Bath-based AudioGO has also confirmed it has sold its US arm Blackstone Audio back to Blackstone's founders, who operate the US Downpour.com download site. Blackstone was acquired by AudioGO just 10 months ago for an undisclosed sum.

AudioGO was set up in July 2010, when private investors bought out BBC Audiobooks. BBC Worldwide continues to own a minority stake.

This article covers options ranging from the free Audacity to ProTools, the full version of which costs $700, and gives the pros and cons of each.

As the author correctly points out, voice actors often end up buying way more complicated software than they really need. Unless you're producing music, or plan to, you don't necessarily need the recording software with all the bells and whistles.

We also suggest scrolling through the comments. There are some good alternative suggestions and helpful feedback from fellow voice actors on the types of recording software they've used successfully to record audiobooks.

Tor Tour: The Audio-Book Department Explained | Tor.com | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Becky Lloyd talks about the process of getting an audiobook made.
Byron Wagner's insight:

"So, thinking about describing a normal day as an Audio Publishing Manager at Pan Macmillan UK… Um. Is there such a thing as a “normal day”?! For a start, I might be in the office or at the studio. The huge variety in my job is one of the things I love most about it.

When I start working on an audiobook (whether for Tor UK or another Pan Macmillan imprint), I will read the book, decide on a shortlist of potential readers, discuss the readers with Editorial and then the author before arranging the recording. This might be two days or (my personal record so far) twelve... the latter refers to the wonder of Space Opera and Peter F. Hamilton. Great North Road was an epic book at 1,087 pages—or three hundred and forty-six THOUSAND words! The sheer size of the book meant the recording had to be that long!"
