dog eared copy: The Pink Chair: Casting for an Audiobook | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
A few weeks ago, I mentioned "The Cattle Call" and "Auditions" on twitter and one of my followers wanted to know the difference. What follows are a couple of brief and general descriptions of the types of ways an audiobook can be cast:

Interview with Narrator Tavia Gilbert | Laura Wright's Blog

Interview with Narrator Tavia Gilbert | Laura Wright's Blog | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Q. When I started getting into audiobooks, I soooo wanted to do voice-over work…until I heard my first really explicit sex scene. LOL! I was just thinking, “okay, for me, this would be a total Beavis and Butthead moment with me giggling all the way through it.” LOL! Guess I wouldn’t be cut out for voice work. So my question is, does Tavia have an acting background? And how did she get into voice work?

A. Ha! You get used to sex scenes. My first scene was awkward and uncomfortable, but it is really no different than any other scene – you still have to tell the story, further the character development, stay true to the intent of the author…so really, it’s not a big deal anymore.

Reprise – One of a Kind: Charlie Huston and The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death | It Rains… You Get Wet | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
The other facet that audiobook listeners will certainly be grateful for is that Blackstone Audio (in their almost 10-hour unabridged audio publication) again successfully paired an exceptional narrator to this uncommon material. The classically trained Paul Michael Garcia succeeded, impressively, in bringing every single character to distinct life with his reading. Given the range of characters in Huston’s book, that can’t be minimized. Garcia keenly nailed the novel’s smart-ass and emotionally scarred protagonist, Web. And, he moved effortlessly between the odd and rich personalities in the tale with his astonishing variety of voices, idioms, and tonal pitches.

f there is anything more I like than listening to audiobooks, it’s talking about audiobooks with others. So, when Jen announced Audiobook Week, I asked a few of the most influential audiobook lovers I know to see if they’d like to have a little chat. I couldn’t be happier when they agreed.

Voice of Choice: Katherine Kellgren, by Joyce Saricks | Booklist Online

Voice of Choice: Katherine Kellgren, by Joyce Saricks | Booklist Online | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Few audiobook narrators achieve in such a short time the heights of Katherine Kellgren, our 2011 Voice of Choice. In seven years, she has narrated just over 150 books and received numerous awards and accolades, including eight starred reviews in Booklist, 20 Audie Award nominations (including 11 this year), and 4 Audie Awards (including Best Solo Female Narration). She is the only audiobook reader who has narrated four Odyssey Honor audios, beginning with Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary “Jacky” Faber, Ship’s Boy, in 2008, and concluding with Alchemy and Meggy Swann, in 2011.

Audiobook Interview with Grover Gardner and Tanya Perez : literatehousewife.com

Audiobook Interview with Grover Gardner and Tanya Perez : literatehousewife.com | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
When Jen announced this year’s Audiobook Week, I immediately knew one thing: I would use it to learn more about the audiobook industry. I love audiobooks, but my knowledge of how a book made it from print to audio was minimal. As I became a more vocal advocate of audiobooks on Twitter, I started following and chatting with people who worked in the audiobook industry. I think perhaps the first person was Tanya Perez (@dogearedcopy). I asked her if she would be willing to be interviewed for Audiobook Week. What I didn’t know at that time was that she is married to Grover Gardner (@GroverGardner), a fantastic audiobook narrator and Studio Director for Blackstone Audio. I swear I live under a boulder sometimes. When Tanya suggested that I interview them both, I was on top of the world.

Audiobooks « letsnotgetcarriedaway | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
While people are now gravitating to e-books as their reading preference I still prefer the idea of someone reading to me.

I am currently finishing up “A Visit From The Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan. Jennifer won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with this work. The story follows a number of characters in youth and middle age and intertwines them all flip-flopping storylines like in the movie Pulp Fiction. However, that sometimes is the problem with audiobooks. I do my listening during my morning jogs and I get easily confused or distracted (ask my wife).

So You’re an Audiobook Virgin : literatehousewife.com | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Even though I’ve been listening to audiobooks consistently now for 2-ish years, I still find it hard to believe that I’m in any position to offer advice to the uninitiated. Sometimes I catch myself remembering my non-audiobook days and think about all of the joy in life I would be missing out on if I hadn’t allowed myself to be influenced by other bloggers such as Beth Fish Reads and Devourer of Books.

Grover's Audiobook Blog: Blasts from the Past, Day 13

Grover's Audiobook Blog: Blasts from the Past, Day 13 | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Yesterday I wrote about the break that introduced me to the New York audiobook scene of the late 1990's and early 2000's. This was a rarified world that thrived on lavish production budgets and the high profit margins afforded by the burgeoning market for retail audiobooks. Production was largely outsourced to audio producers, who hired directors, who in turn hired the studios and the talent. It wasn't unusual for a publisher to drop upwards of $30,000 on production for a best-selling title.

Audiobooks for the Uninitiated – Audiobook Week Discussion « Devourer of Books

Audiobooks for the Uninitiated – Audiobook Week Discussion « Devourer of Books | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Audiobook literacy is a skill, just as printed word literacy is a skill and, while they are complementary, they do not overlap completely. If you are already a good reader, you have a huge leg up on developing your audiobook literacy, but you won’t just be magically there. It does take a little time to train your brain to process the spoken word in the same way it processes the written word; most of us haven’t sat and listened to someone read aloud to us for decades before starting to listen to audiobooks.

Grover's Audiobook Blog: Blasts from the Past, Day 9 | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
I recorded all three for Books On Tape over the course of nearly a decade. Inexplicably, Parts I and II have never been transferred to CD or download. This is truly unfortunate, for while the second volume is not quite as gripping as the others, Part I is indispensable reading if you are even remotely interested in American politics and Southern culture. Luckily Master of the Senate is still available on Audible. I highly recommend it as one of those history books that never goes out of date.

The reviewers are other bloggers like yours truly and other avid listeners. Other review journals are available from SLJ and other professional reviews, but I like to hear what other bloggers have to say at Audiobook Jukebox.

In Short - Short Form Audio Content

In Short - Short Form Audio Content | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
During a trip down to the Information Today, Inc. offices, I listened to one of my favorite new-to-me podcasts: the Slate Audio Book Club. It's been a long time since I was in a literature class where I argued the merits of Toni Morrison's Beloved or gushed about To Kill a Mockingbird, and I miss it. Moreover, I loved the convenience of using what could have been a tedious 3-hour car trip to let the folks at Slate tackle David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest for me because I just don't know if I have that kind of reading stamina.
