Grover's Audiobook Blog: Blasts from the Past, Day 18

Grover's Audiobook Blog: Blasts from the Past, Day 18 | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
The Stand was one of the first major books I narrated for Books On Tape under the contract that Flo Gibson arranged with them. It was a memorable experience. This was the edited-down version, which was the only available at that time, but even so it was a monumental undertaking. Of course, back then we didn't bat an eye at thousand-page books--in fact, what was the point of going to all that trouble for some little dinky thing?

Author Terry Pratchett defends right-to-die film | AP | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
LONDON (AP) — Writer Terry Pratchett said Tuesday that watching a man being helped to die had reaffirmed his support for assisted suicide, while anti-euthanasia groups criticized the televised death as propaganda that could encourage copycat suicides.

The suicide, filmed for a BBC documentary, has reopened debate on Britain's decades-old law against helping another person end their life.

Best-selling fantasy author Pratchett was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease in 2007 and is a vocal supporter of the right to die.

Heller entertains at Camarillo Library

Heller entertains at Camarillo Library | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Johnny Heller remembers hanging out at the library as a kid growing up in Chicago's suburbs. 'It was cold outside. That's where we went to get warm,' he said. It may be the reason that he never wanted someone to read to him.

"I was always saying, 'Give me the book; don't read it to me,' " Heller said.

That Heller makes his living as an audiobook reader is one of the ironies of his life. But a chance meeting with the head of a company called Recorded Books led Heller to start doing audio books, and he's never looked back. He's recorded more than 400 audiobooks.

Narrative Undertones: My Interview with Phil Gigante « The Guilded Earlobe | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Often I am asked who my favorite narrator is, and despite a lot of competition, I always come out with one name, Phil Gigante. Phil has narrated nearly 150 audiobooks in his career, winning Audies in 2009 in the romance category for The Dark Highlander, and in 2011 in the Science Fiction Category for The Stainless Steel Rat. You can find a list of all Phil’s narrations here. Phil graciously took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few of my questions.

Sedaris inspired by audiobook - Telegraph

Sedaris inspired by audiobook - Telegraph | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Anyone who doubts that there's plenty of bite to Sedaris need only glance at his new book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, a collection of animal tales featuring – among others – an Aids-injected rat, an alcoholic cat and a young stork appalled by the facts of life.

He first got the idea, he says, when someone gave him an audio book of South African folk tales. "They were things like, the hyena married the giraffe and on their wedding night, he ripped her throat out. I thought, I can do better than this. I just liked the idea of playing around with the idea of fables."

the league of reluctant adults: Interview: Xe Sands, Audio Narrator

the league of reluctant adults: Interview: Xe Sands, Audio Narrator | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
So before reading this post, who knew June is Audiobook Month? Anyone?

I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't been recently been involved in the creation of audiobooks for the first three Dreg City books (although when I say involved, that mostly means signing the contract, helping my amazing narrator with pronunciation questions, and then pimping the project here and there). The books are with Tantor Audio, and THREE DAYS TO DEAD is currently available for purchase. AS LIE THE DEAD will be available June 20, with ANOTHER KIND OF DEAD releasing August 2 (same day as the print version).

My absolute favorite part of this whole process was "meeting" Xe Sands, who is the voice behind these audiobooks. She's a fabulous lady and her enjoyment of my books has meant the world to me.

Offended by an Audition for Voiceover Talent? | UNnouncer

Offended by an Audition for Voiceover Talent? | UNnouncer | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Voiceover talent often lose gigs with no notice from their clients, who can decide to use a new voice any time they want to. Pro voices know this.

A studio owner (we’ll call him Rick) for whom I’ve done bit of voice over work called me the other day with what seemed like a common question. He wanted to know if I would be willing to audition for a gig. See, his client was considering voiceover talent for their next campaign, and Rick wanted to be sure that I wouldn’t be “offended” if he threw my hat in the ring.

Robert Fass and I started this interview over several weeks, in fits and starts, and through a few transformations, as changes in Robert’s audio life occurred since the inception of this interview. One notable one is his 2011 Audie award for Empire of Liberty which he recently garnered in NYC at the 16th Annual Audie Awards ceremony celebrating excellence in the audio book industry. I couldn’t resist a few extra questions, so here at last is the final permutation.

More than Books: A good book speaks for itself

More than Books: A good book speaks for itself | Audiobook Business News | Scoop.it
Check out the first-floor display that celebrates June as audiobook month. In addition to the standard audiobooks on CD, which, don’t get me wrong, I think are great, there are a couple of other formats put out for your consideration.

I am coming to appreciate the new MP3 CD format. An MP3 CD is a disc that compresses audio files so that more audio can fit on an MP3 CD that on a standard compact disc. An average audiobook, for example, usually fills around eight standard compact discs. The same audiobook can fit on one MP3 CD. No need to switch discs while driving!
