Grief without God is a challenge for nonbelievers

Grief without God is a challenge for nonbelievers | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it
BERKELEY, Calif. – When Rebecca Hensler's infant son died in 2009, she received numerous condolences from friends, colleagues and even total strangers she met online.

She knew their intentions were good, but their words weren't always helpful. And in the rawness of her grief, Hensler found some of them downright hurtful.

Hensler is an atheist, so when people described her three-month-old son Jude as being an angel, or part of God's plan, or "in a better place" than in his mother's arms, the pain sometimes overwhelmed her.

Reason Rally and American Atheists - Mad Art Lab | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

As promised I will be writing a weekly column highlighting what work I am doing in my art studio. This week I am taking on the role of artist as promotional-activist and have donated my time to make some Surly-Ramics to help spread the word about two secular events that are on the horizon for this coming spring.

The Debunking Handbook: now freely available for download

The Debunking Handbook: now freely available for download | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Although there is a great deal of psychological research on misinformation, there's no summary of the literature that offers practical guidelines on the most effective ways of reducing the influence of myths. The Debunking Handbook boils the research down into a short, simple summary, intended as a guide for communicators in all areas (not just climate) who encounter misinformation.

The Oprah effect and why not all scientific evidence is valuable | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

One of the inspirations behind Science-ish was the seemingly endless barrage of complaints by friends in medicine regarding the “Oprah effect” on their offices and hospital wards: patients making important decisions about a lifestyle choice or treatment option based on something they had seen on Queen of daytime talk.

The Way I See It: Can I Still Be A Christian If...?

The Way I See It: Can I Still Be A Christian If...? | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Being a Christian seems really confusing in this day and age and I have some legitimate questions. I know at least some of my morals will conflict with mainstream Christianity, so I'm hoping they will make a few compromises and still accept me. This is an open letter extending to any Christian or atheist who wishes to reply and shed some light on these questions.

It's really an issue of who is boss. Do I want to access the benefits of Christianity while maintaining sovereignty over my own life or do I want to yield to the sovereignty of God who created me and knows what is best for me? God is sort of like the parent who says, "You can do it your way if you want, but I know the outcome and you won't like it."

Dead-Logic: The Path of a Critical Thinker (part one) | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

If I had to choose the "If You're Only Going to Read One Thing on Dead-Logic, Read This" blog entries, my gut would want me to say this series is the one. I'm not sure whether my mind agrees with my gut, but I will say that these next few entries will showcase the critical thinking tips and tools that I've learned over the past two decades (that makes me sound old), and feature some of the foundational principles I learned from two of the biggest influences in my life in this area: Dr. Herman Stark from South Suburban College, and Dr. Gary Burlington (formerly) from Lincoln Christian College. I am indebted to these men more than they know.

Ten Reasons Why Most Believers Don't Seriously Question Their Faith

Ten Reasons Why Most Believers Don't Seriously Question Their Faith | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

This topic interests me to no end. Why don't most believers seriously question their faith? Does it take a special type of individual? Does it require some personality trait that believers don't have? Does that make skeptics different people? Could it be intelligence? Could it be that skeptics have a higher self-esteem than others? Is it that we don't need social approval? Is it that life's experiences have shown us we cannot accept the dominant opinion on a matter? Is it that we question what we're told in general? Perhaps, but when we look at skeptics in general there doesn't seem to be a set pattern. Perhaps a scientific poll might help answer that kind of question. What I do think is that the following ten reasons are almost certainly necessary conditions even if they are not sufficient ones:

PracticalDoubt.com » Ben Breedlove and the Near Death Experience | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

The Internet has been chattering about the death of Texas teenager Ben Breedlove and the three near death experiences he documented in a YouTube video before his death this Christmas. 1,500 gathered to mourn and/or celebrate the passing of Breedlove, who described his last NDE as a “peaceful” place he “did not want to wake up” from. His description of NDEs began with an incident at the age of four, where he saw a bright light above him in the hallway of a hospital. His last one, where his heart had stopped for three minutes, occurred not long before his death and involved a large, white room with no walls, him in a nice suit, and a mirror where he could see that he was proud of his life accomplishments.

Nihilistic Existentialism

Nihilistic Existentialism | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Those who disbelieve in God will usually agree that there is no “objective” meaning to their lives, but deny that therefore there is no meaning at all. Instead, they argue that their lives can be fulfilling and purposeful from the subjective perspectives of themselves and other human beings. Because they find this satisfying, they do not sink into despair and they do not feel that suicide is the best option.

If you visit The Family Research Council (FRC) website, you can examine the "Pro-family voting record of your Member of Congress." The FRC, a conservative Christian lobbying group, is not alone in providing so-called "scorecards" that rate politicians according to how well they mesh with the group's core beliefs. Many labor groups, women's rights groups, environmental groups and various business interests offer similar services to their members and constituents.
