The Role of Faith in the Abortion Debate

The Role of Faith in the Abortion Debate | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

I’ve often said that the pro-life position in the abortion debate is largely fueled by religion. I had my preconceptions cemented last Sunday when the church I went to presented a sermon on abortion. Did you know that 50 million babies have been killed under this terrible law? It’s a tragedy! Everyone has been affected by it! The church needs to stand up for biblical truth!

Believe It Or Not: 7 Facts You're Not Supposed To Know About Religion | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Religion is one of those big taboo topics that many people are terrified to touch: too afraid that others will question their religious loyalties and just as afraid to step on the minefield that is the overhyped sensitivity of some believers.

And this is precisely why it is so much fun to talk about it.

Faith-Healing Child Killers Sentenced to Prison | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Dale Hickman and Shannon Hickman had a baby son who was born prematurely and who died shortly after birth. You probably shouldn't feel sorry for them, though, because their newborn son had a 99.9 chance of survival if they had only gotten him to a hospital. Instead they had the birth at home and decided to pray over the boy instead of seeking medical help.

Atheists should make more noise

Atheists should make more noise | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it
I am an atheist, don’t know why.

I’d like to tell you that I was one of those intelligent children who at age 11 gave the religion question careful thought and then alerted their parents that they wouldn’t be doing the church thing no more. Or that reading about the Holocaust had made me think of the open sky above Treblinka and wonder what kind of god didn’t care to notice the crematoria, especially when he could allegedly see a little sparrow fall.

Ten Reasons Why Most Believers Don't Seriously Question Their Faith

Ten Reasons Why Most Believers Don't Seriously Question Their Faith | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

This topic interests me to no end. Why don't most believers seriously question their faith? Does it take a special type of individual? Does it require some personality trait that believers don't have? Does that make skeptics different people? Could it be intelligence? Could it be that skeptics have a higher self-esteem than others? Is it that we don't need social approval? Is it that life's experiences have shown us we cannot accept the dominant opinion on a matter? Is it that we question what we're told in general? Perhaps, but when we look at skeptics in general there doesn't seem to be a set pattern. Perhaps a scientific poll might help answer that kind of question. What I do think is that the following ten reasons are almost certainly necessary conditions even if they are not sufficient ones:

The Ten Marks of a Deluded Person | Debunking Christianity

The Ten Marks of a Deluded Person | Debunking Christianity | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Below in no particular order are what I consider the ten marks (or characteristics) of a deluded person. I think even educated Christians will agree with most of them. You might want to consider from this checklist how many of them apply to you. To the degree that more of them apply then the more likely you are deluded by your faith. Now it’s quite possible that Christians can be deluded and yet their faith is true, in the same sense that a person might be brainwashed or indoctrinated into believing the truth. But the point is that if you’re deluded then you have no reason to believe.
