Have Scientific Questions? There Are No 'Answers in Genesis' | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it
When we permit theology to define our science, we end up with gibberish, but not even consistent gibberish.

Neil deGrasse Tyson responds | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me the note reproduced below the line, which he intended to post as a comment. Since I’ve put up two posts within one week about his views on science and faith (here and here), I thought it only fair to elevate his comment to a full post, allowing everyone to see it easily. (His comment was intended to follow the first link given above.) I present it here without any response on my part. I have verified by email that this is indeed Tyson himself.

Creationism Kicked: Indiana Bill Killed Over Fears Of Costly Litigation

Ding, dong, the bill is dead, the creationism bill is dead!

Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma has decided to table legislation that would have mandated the teaching of “creation science” in public schools. The bill had passed the Indiana Senate, albeit with a modification requiring the teaching of other theories on the origins of life on Earth from several religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Scientology.

Antievolution bills: Bad for your health? | NCSE | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

In a column for the Concord Monitor (January 22, 2012), Leslie Brunetta criticized the latest spate of proposed antievolution measures, writing, "these bills are bad for my health and the health of each of the 1.5 million Americans diagnosed with cancer every year." She explains, "Although most such bills die in committee, they legitimize the idea that the theory of evolution is just an opinion. It is actually a robust explanation for the diversity of life on earth, supported by thousands of observations and experiments, used to make testable predictions about nature — which includes our bodies."

Smriti Daniel is pleasantly surprised to meet a ‘nice grandfather-like figure’– Richard Dawkins, a man with the reputation of being almost militant in his views about religion and evolution and easily one of the most controversial authors to grace the Galle Literary Festival.

Ongoing Human Evolution

Ongoing Human Evolution | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Humans like us have existed for around 200,000 years -- moving from hunter-gathers to early settlements to the large-scale civilization we know today. And how much evolution has occurred in our species over that time span... or even over the past few of thousand years? Most people seem to assume that there hasn't been much evolution (if any) at all and that humans have essentially stopped evolving -- but nothing could be further from the truth.

Why is Creationism dangerous? | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

If you follow Crocoduck at all, you’ve heard us talk about how Creationism is ridiculous, make fun of Creationist stupidity, and point out the mountains of evidence for evolution. Yet I’m sure some of our readers are thinking, “Yeah, but so what? What’s the big deal? Sure, it’s stupid; sure, it’s crazy; but it’s harmless, right?”

Victory for teachers who say that creationism is nonsense | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Yesterday, the Supreme Court “declined to hear an appeal Tuesday from a former high school student who sued his history teacher, saying he disparaged Christianity in class in violation of the student’s First Amendment rights.” The case, C. F. v. Capistrano USD, involved a high school student who was insulted that his history teacher, James Corbett, didn’t think much of creationism and religion. Some of Corbett’s comments (which deserve some sort of hero’s award) are:

Sam Radcliffe's comment, January 26, 2012 5:28 AM
Climate change is one thing. The idea that climate change is caused by man is a different thing altogether. The latter requires as much a leap as does the belief in an almighty god. That puts it on the side of creationism, not science.
