Victory for teachers who say that creationism is nonsense | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Yesterday, the Supreme Court “declined to hear an appeal Tuesday from a former high school student who sued his history teacher, saying he disparaged Christianity in class in violation of the student’s First Amendment rights.” The case, C. F. v. Capistrano USD, involved a high school student who was insulted that his history teacher, James Corbett, didn’t think much of creationism and religion. Some of Corbett’s comments (which deserve some sort of hero’s award) are:

Climate change is one thing. The idea that climate change is caused by man is a different thing altogether. The latter requires as much a leap as does the belief in an almighty god. That puts it on the side of creationism, not science.

Tri-City Herald Publishes Creationist’s Tall Tale As News | Friendly Atheist | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Here’s a perfect example of bad reporting.

John Trumbo of the Tri-City Herald in Washington state wrote an article about Greg Morgan, a local man who recently found an unusual sandstone formation. And there’s only one conclusion he can draw from it: “This is excellent evidence for Noah’s flood. It is far better than what anyone believes for an ancient Earth,” Morgan said.

In a column for the Concord Monitor (January 22, 2012), Leslie Brunetta criticized the latest spate of proposed antievolution measures, writing, "these bills are bad for my health and the health of each of the 1.5 million Americans diagnosed with cancer every year." She explains, "Although most such bills die in committee, they legitimize the idea that the theory of evolution is just an opinion. It is actually a robust explanation for the diversity of life on earth, supported by thousands of observations and experiments, used to make testable predictions about nature — which includes our bodies."
