Gingrich: Secularism to Blame for U.S. Economy

Gingrich: Secularism to Blame for U.S. Economy | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

You know how the Christian god sends hurricanes, tornados, and earthquakes to destroy cities and towns that displease it in some manner? When this happens, I've noticed that many of the worst offenders (e.g., atheists, homosexuals, etc.) escape unscathed while many devout Christians are harmed. It is almost as if the weather was random, but obviously that can't be true. Anyway, what if it was not just a town or city that displeased the Christian god but the entire country? What do you suppose would happen then?

Is the United States sliding toward theocracy? That’s what Republican presidential candidates have told us for more than a year. Radical Islam, they’ve argued, is on the verge of taking over our country through Sharia law.

Is America a Christian Nation? Readers Respond to Chuck Colson

On November 4, the Los Angeles Times published my Opinion Editorial entitled “What’s God Got to do With it?” (which I also posted on Skepticblog) about Congress reaffirming our national motto “In God We Trust.” I argued that trust does not come from God but from very specific social, political, and economic institutions.

Penn Jillette: An Atheist's Guide to the 2012 Election | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

If you visit The Family Research Council (FRC) website, you can examine the "Pro-family voting record of your Member of Congress." The FRC, a conservative Christian lobbying group, is not alone in providing so-called "scorecards" that rate politicians according to how well they mesh with the group's core beliefs. Many labor groups, women's rights groups, environmental groups and various business interests offer similar services to their members and constituents.

Anti-bullying legislation passes state Senate

Anti-bullying legislation passes state Senate | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

The Michigan Senate passed legislation Wednesday that requires school districts to develop anti-bullying policies, but the father of the boy for whom the bill is named says he has strong objections to language inserted at the last minute.

One of the reforms will require school districts to have procedures in place to address bullying complaints. But the bill now also has language that says requirements don't "prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction of a school employee, school volunteer, pupil, or a pupil's parent or guardian."

Flogging God | Center for Inquiry | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday passed overwhelmingly a resolution “reaffirming” the phrase “In God We Trust” as our national motto. The vote was 396 to 9. The need for reaffirming of this motto was not clearly stated in the resolution, but the real motivation for this resolution is both too obvious and too unseemly to warrant acknowledgment: most politicians in this God-intoxicated country want to milk God for all the votes they can get.

The Salvation Army has a history of active discrimination against gays and lesbians. While you might think you're helping the hungry and homeless by dropping a few dollars in the bright red buckets, not everyone can share in the donations. Many LGBT people are rejected by the evangelical church charity because they're "sexually impure."
