Religion Imprisons Women | Daylight Atheism | Big Think | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

One hypothesis for the origin of religion is that it's a kind of "costly signaling" - a way for people to prove their loyalty to the group by participating in complex rituals and extravagant shows of devotion. But there's an underappreciated danger to this: when everyone in a community already follows a strict interpretation of faith, religious belief will have a tendency to spiral out of control into extremism, as group members go to greater and greater lengths to express their piety. And when religion grows more and more fanatical, while it's bad for everyone forced to live under its dictates, it's inevitably women who suffer the most.

Duquesne University Refuses to Recognize Campus Atheist Group | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Duquesne University is a Catholic school in Pennsylvania.

So is DePaul University, just outside of Chicago. DePaul has a thriving Secular Student Alliance group — the DePaul Alliance for Free Thought — which encourages conversations about religion between religious and non-religious students. They also bring in speakers for the school, question long-held beliefs of everyone, and raise awareness about atheism-related issues for the school population. They’re less interested in “proselytizing atheism” and more interested in educating people about religion and getting them to think critically.

The Scarlet Letter of Atheism

The Scarlet Letter of Atheism | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

The wonderful irony must be the precise reasoning behind the symbol of The Out Campaign. The themes of pariahdom articulated in the pages of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s timeless novel mirror the mentality many atheists face today. The decision to reject a personal god (or the concepts of god/religion altogether) is typically viewed in the same damning light that poor Hester suffered due to her unchristian behaviors. Unfortunately, it is the rejectors of these foolish fairy tales and archaic paranormalities that are deemed the weird ones. Funny that those who come to religious decisions based on direct studying of the evidence are the ones looked at strangely.

Duquesne University Discriminates Against Atheists

Duquesne University Discriminates Against Atheists | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Atheists at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, are being denied the ability to create a secular student group. The excuses being offered by Duquesne officials might sound more credible if it weren't for the fact that Duquesne has already recognized Jewish, Muslim, and even gay student groups. It's only atheists who are being excluded because the goals of a secular group, promoting understanding and tolerance of secularism and atheists, is contrary to the school's mission.

14,000 daughters. Fourteen thousand women is a lot of victims of human trafficking.

In fact I’m wrong. I should write 14,000 females. Many of these 14,000 are girls, not yet women, girls often trafficked as sex workers -- a kind of 21st Century slavery. Many of these 14,000 victims are beaten, others raped. Many become pregnant, others contract HIV.
