The Catholic Hierarchy’s Quest To Erase Same-Sex Marriages From The Universe

The Catholic Hierarchy’s Quest To Erase Same-Sex Marriages From The Universe | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Fifty years ago, the only Catholic President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, stressed the importance of separating church and state, imagining a nation “where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials.” Fast forward to the present where Rick Santorum — also Catholic — feels that mentality makes him throw up, and it’s clear how much power the Catholic Hierarchy is now exerting over the debate about equality.

Secular Values Are American Values | Secular Coalition for America

Secular Values Are American Values | Secular Coalition for America | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

In Michigan, Tuesday, when asked what he would do as president to protect religious liberty, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney claimed that President Obama has not been sensitive to religious freedom, saying that the administration has "fought against religion" because those the President "hangs around with" have a "secular agenda." Romney told the audience that he would be more sensitive to the issue. How a president would protect religious freedom is an important question, but Romney's answer sheds light on some alarming misconceptions about what religious freedom is, why it is important, and what really threatens it.

The Way I See It: Can I Still Be A Christian If...?

The Way I See It: Can I Still Be A Christian If...? | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Being a Christian seems really confusing in this day and age and I have some legitimate questions. I know at least some of my morals will conflict with mainstream Christianity, so I'm hoping they will make a few compromises and still accept me. This is an open letter extending to any Christian or atheist who wishes to reply and shed some light on these questions.

It's really an issue of who is boss. Do I want to access the benefits of Christianity while maintaining sovereignty over my own life or do I want to yield to the sovereignty of God who created me and knows what is best for me? God is sort of like the parent who says, "You can do it your way if you want, but I know the outcome and you won't like it."

Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me the note reproduced below the line, which he intended to post as a comment. Since I’ve put up two posts within one week about his views on science and faith (here and here), I thought it only fair to elevate his comment to a full post, allowing everyone to see it easily. (His comment was intended to follow the first link given above.) I present it here without any response on my part. I have verified by email that this is indeed Tyson himself.

Moving Secularism Forward: Council for Secular Humanism Conference 2012

Moving Secularism Forward: Council for Secular Humanism Conference 2012 | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

Florida will host one of 2012’s most dramatic church-state battles. In response to a Council for Secular Humanism lawsuit, a measure on Florida’s November 2012 ballot would amend the state constitution to jettison language that forbids state funding of religious institutions. The national implications: more than thirty-five other states have similar constitutional provisions (often called “Blaine Amendments”) that bar state aid to religious groups in language stronger than the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.

At “Moving Secularism Forward,” you’ll learn about the Florida face-off—about what you can do to help defend Florida’s Blaine Amendment—and much, much more!

Grief without God is a challenge for nonbelievers

Grief without God is a challenge for nonbelievers | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it
BERKELEY, Calif. – When Rebecca Hensler's infant son died in 2009, she received numerous condolences from friends, colleagues and even total strangers she met online.

She knew their intentions were good, but their words weren't always helpful. And in the rawness of her grief, Hensler found some of them downright hurtful.

Hensler is an atheist, so when people described her three-month-old son Jude as being an angel, or part of God's plan, or "in a better place" than in his mother's arms, the pain sometimes overwhelmed her.
