"I gave her my usual warm greeting and checked her ID and she noticed the crossbuster on my arm. Then she got a really disgusted look on her face and asked me if I realized that it could be *highly offensive* to people. I told her that yes I did and to have a nice day."

We’re Telling Them They’re Wrong: Why Coming Out Atheist Is Inherently Oppositional

We’re Telling Them They’re Wrong: Why Coming Out Atheist Is Inherently Oppositional | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

"Yup. Coming out is hugely important for atheists. I assume this is not a wildly controversial statement. Coming out — and making our community a safer place to come out into, and making the world a safer place to come out in — is pretty much Number One on atheists’ To Do list. And yes, atheists have a huge amount to learn from the LGBT communities about coming out, not just the why but the how: what to say, when to say it, how to say it, who to say it to, what to do if people freak out. There are tons of parallels between the LGBT movement and the atheist movement, and the importance of coming out is one of them — as are many of the specific strategies about doing it."

As you might recall, in late August I wrote that Egyptian police had arrested 23-year-old Ayman Yusef Mansur for "insulting Islam" in postings on his Facebook wall. Last week, the case came to an unfortunate close when a court convincted and sentenced Mansur to three years in prison, with hard labor, according to the news outlet Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Monday Morning Quotes: Ricky Gervais

Monday Morning Quotes: Ricky Gervais | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

“I don't go after any particular religious group. I look at the absurdity of some beliefs. I don't think there's anything scary about this, these are facts to me. When a fundamentalist's belief is that the Earth is 5000 years old, that's ludicrous. It's 4.6 billion years. That should be taught as strict a truth as two and two are four. I don't want to offend anyone but sometimes I feel as if I'm talking to a 25-year-old child who believes in the tooth fairy. I've got to go: 'There's no such thing. Listen to yourself.’

Evangelical: Why Do Many Evangelicals Get Science From a Creationist?

Lately, Karl Giberson and Randall J. Stephens have spilled some ink trying to convince the world that there is a distinction to be drawn between evangelicalism and fundamentalism. “Fundamentalism appeals to evangelicals who have become convinced that their country has been overrun by a vast secular conspiracy; denial is the simplest and most attractive response to change,” they write in this week’s Times. “Evangelicalism at its best seeks a biblically grounded expression of Christianity that is intellectually engaged, humble and forward-looking. In contrast, fundamentalism is literalistic, overconfident and reactionary.” So fundamentalism is, in their view, spiritually and intellectually stagnant evangelicalism.

Is Your Religion a Cult? Of Course It Is!

Is Your Religion a Cult? Of Course It Is! | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

When I was a little kid I started a club. It was kind of small, only four members including me. Nonetheless I was the leader and I made the rules. The only rule I actually remember was very simple, and very childish. The rule stated that no club member could believe that super heroes were real...except for my favorite one at the time...Spiderman. Who would have thought that at age 7, I actually understood the foundation of all religions..."your personal favorite fairy tale is the only one in which you may believe."

The Confrontational Nature of Coming Out Atheist

The Confrontational Nature of Coming Out Atheist | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

"Greta Christina has written one of the most thought-provoking posts about coming out atheist I've read in awhile. Her central point is that coming out as an atheist (i.e., disclosing our atheism to others) is an inherently oppositional act because it communicates to believers that they are wrong on the god question. For all of us who have been wondering why our very existence seems to agitate the religious so much, I think we may have our answer."

Not Every Church Practice Is Useless

Not Every Church Practice Is Useless | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

"Particularly in immigrant and black communities (and conceivably in Central American/hispanic ones as well), the church is the focal point of civil life. It is a resource not only for instrumental support like counselling and a financial safety net, but as an existential anchor. The prospect for many of “leaving the church” is not so simple as just getting to sleep in on Sundays -– it has real repercussions. Setting up a humanist church speaks directly to those people: “you don’t have to ‘leave the church’, you are simply invited to switch churches. This one doesn’t have a god in it”."

For over forty years Christopher Hitchens has written and spoken with passionate commitment on matters that others fear to broach. His life has been one of defiance, wit and humility. Now his life is threatened by cancer, but his devotion to the truth and his extraordinary courage are undiminished. In this special event for Intelligence⊃2; , he'll be in conversation via satellite in Washington D.C. with Stephen Fry who'll be on stage live at the Royal Festival Hall. Don't miss this chance to hear one of the great public intellectuals of our age discussing politics, literature and, as he puts it, "the things that make life worth defending – foes like faith and false consolation".
