The Politics of the Troubled Teen Industry

The troubled teen industry as we know it today would never exist without political influence and protection. If you were to ask the average citizen if painful electric shock therapy, isolation in dog cages, or reinactments of traumatic sexual abuse in front of other peers were therapeutic or effective methods of treating troubled children or teenage addiction, they would likely say no. Re-word your questions and ask those same individuals if they support involuntary drug treatment for youth or the War on Drugs and you may get a different answer.

Posting “In God We Trust” signs in city and county government buildings has become all the rage in California.

The drive is spearheaded by a Bakersfield woman named Jacquie Sullivan who persuaded officials in her town to adopt the motto and then took the crusade to other cities. The most recent town to approve the motto is Port Hueneme in Ventura County. The vote was 4-1.

Pious Political Posturing Alert!: U.S. House Set To Vote On Bills Promoting Religion

Our nation has more than a few pressing problems.

The economy is in the tank, unemployment is unacceptably high and foreclosures are kicking many families into the street. The gap between the uber-wealthy and everybody else gets wider every day, and many people are worried about how we’ll pay for Social Security and Medicare as more baby boomers join the rolls.

So what’s on the agenda in the U.S. House of Representatives today?

Religion plays a big role in politics. Noted polling organization Pew Research just published a report detailing which candidate people are likely to vote for based on religion. A USA Today report suggests Rick Santorum's popularity in South Carolina has been significantly increased by his religious positions on issues and support of the evangelical Christian movement. That's all a shame because America would be better off if only atheists were allowed to hold public office.

Church and humanists clash over Bishops in parliament

The conflicting views of the Church of England and the British Humanist Association (BHA) were clear at today’s evidence session on Bishops sitting in the House of Lords, the ‘Lords Spiritual’. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, and Andrew Copson, BHA Chief Executive, were both invited to give evidence to the parliamentary Joint Committee looking at the draft House of Lords Reform Bill on Monday 28 November. The BHA had, last month, submitted detailed written evidence to the Committee opposing and criticising the government’s proposals on the Bishops.
