Dead-Logic: The Path of a Critical Thinker (part one)

Dead-Logic: The Path of a Critical Thinker (part one) | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

If I had to choose the "If You're Only Going to Read One Thing on Dead-Logic, Read This" blog entries, my gut would want me to say this series is the one. I'm not sure whether my mind agrees with my gut, but I will say that these next few entries will showcase the critical thinking tips and tools that I've learned over the past two decades (that makes me sound old), and feature some of the foundational principles I learned from two of the biggest influences in my life in this area: Dr. Herman Stark from South Suburban College, and Dr. Gary Burlington (formerly) from Lincoln Christian College. I am indebted to these men more than they know.

Atheism 101: A Reading List

Atheism 101: A Reading List | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

One question frequently asked by those just discovering atheism is, "What books would you recommend to someone just beginning to explore atheism?" Not only is this an excellent question, but it is one I remember wanting desperately to ask at one point in my life. Unfortunately, I could not find anyone to ask. All Believers Are Not Created Equal – A Clarification | Al Stefanelli

All Believers Are Not Created Equal – A Clarification | Al Stefanelli | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

I have been asked why I “paint with a broad brush” regarding those who hold beliefs in deities; why I ‘”lump together” all believers. I find this to be extremely annoying because I don’t do this on the level that I am frequently accused of. Yes, there are areas in which I do paint with such a brush, and do engage in the lumping together of all believers. These areas are relegated to my categorical rejection of the existence of all gods, that all religious belief is a form of mental illness (the clinical delusion of adults with imaginary friends) and that religion has absolutely no place in government, public schools and any spaces that have been set aside for the use of the general public.

In Georgia, a School Board President Faces Opposition Simply Because He Won’t Reveal His Religious Preference | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

A man named Leonard Presberg was recently elected to the Fayette County Board of Education (in Georgia). That was back in November. In January, he was named Chairman of the board.

What are his views on education? You would think that’s the only point of concern for local residents… but at a school board meeting last week, resident David Barlow spoke out against Presberg… not because of any particular educational policy they disagreed about, but because it appears that Presberg is a member of — wait for it — the Fayette Freethought Society.

Scooby-Doo is Veggie Tales for secular humanists - Boing Boing | Modern Atheism | Scoop.it

At Comics Alliance, Chris Sims makes such a good argument that I can only gape and think, "Oh my god, why had I never noticed this before?"

"Because that's the thing about Scooby-Doo: The bad guys in every episode aren't monsters, they're liars."
