While you might think you're helping the hungry and homeless by dropping a few dollars in the bright red buckets, not everyone can share in the donations. Many LGBT people are rejected by the evangelical church charity because they're "sexually impure."

Every year as we head into Christmas, members of the Salvation Army appear in public areas to solicit donations for the organization. It is easy to dig into a pocket and drop some loose change into the bucket, but that may not be the best decision, and it certainly should not give warm feelings of charity and good holiday cheer for those who do.

Atheists in military seek recognition to minister to troops

Capt. Ryan Jean wanted to perform well on the Army's psychological evaluation for soldiers. But he also wanted to answer the questions honestly. So when he was asked whether he believed his life had a lasting purpose, Jean, an atheist, saw no choice but to say no.


Those and other responses, Jean says, won him a trip to see the post chaplain, who berated him for his lack of faith.
