Why so FLAT?
Mobile is the single word answer to why most websites are flattening out their designs. As phones outnumber desktops one of the manifestations of "mobile first" is we are adopting designs that look better on our phones and pads - FLAT designs.

Amazing how quickly this worm turned, but you won't have trouble finding hundreds of examples of great flat website design like these 40. My favorite is http://madebyfibb.com/ for its cascading windows feel and images that engage and point at CTAs.

Experian Study Email Open and Conversion Rates Best Off Peak
Send your email marketing when everyone else is and your response rates will suffer. The results of this study showing the off peak time of 8 to midnight converts the best reminds me of what a friend told me the other day.

My friend is a businesswoman mom and about ten other things. She explained that she likes to get in bed with her phone or tablet and curate her email. Most end up in the trash, but a great subject line or offer from a trusted source might get opened and might even prompt a buying decision.

The Experian study may have implications for blogging and social media marketing too. I've always been skeptical about the "right time" infographics that float around since they tend to form a consensus and I'm interested in avoiding the mob as much as possible.

VIral content goes viral for many reasons time of day may be one of them, but I doubt it. I think Experian's results should create a pause before we all pile on to creating Internet marketing lock stepped to some formula that doesn't work.

Mobile Marketing Is A Conversation - 2 CSFs (Critical Success Factors)

Mobile Marketing Is A Conversation - 2 CSFs (Critical Success Factors) | AtDotCom Social media | Scoop.it

Make Your Mobile Strategy Work
Two tips here most know but repeating doesn't hurt:

* Be Interactive (facilitate communication).

* Create compelling content.

If you do the first bullet right and LISTEN to what your customers tell you the second bullet is a breeze. Remember, all marketing is a CONVERSATION now so your tactics and plans aren't complete until you see, listen to and curate the reaction.

If that last statement is TRUE for marketing in general and Internet marketing in particular it is BEYOND true for mobile marketing. The minute your marketing hits the phone it feels more intimate and two way (if you are doing it right lol).

Solid article here that may be old hat for many these days, but mobile continues to be a mystery wrapped in an enigma for me so still in "study mode" :). M

Mobile shopping is still a sliver of overall retail, and of Amazon’s revenue. While the company doesn’t divulge details, analysts think that maybe 8 percent of the company’s $61 billion in annual sales come from phones and tablets. But Hall’s domain is growing as more people use smartphones and tablets. Amazon runs a slew of mobile apps, including the basic Amazon Mobile shopping app. There’s also Flow, which pulls up price information (and a chance to buy on Amazon instead) for any product you aim your smartphone’s camera at.

Is E-commerce Stuck In The Mud? After our first Holiday Ecommies Review of 30+ top online retailers (@Ecommies is a new ecommerce ratings, review and award site coming soon). It’s clear e-retailers are stuck in the mud.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, December 11, 2013 10:47 AM

Fun writing this post for janlgordon new Editors of Chaos http://www.curatti.com. Conclusion after our first Ecommie Awards for Holiday 2013 is YES e-commerce is stuck in mud of its own making.

Online retailers seem stuck fighting battles that are all but over such as the adoption of free shipping out and back, deal-of-the-day and Buy More, Save More. The ocean runs red as competitors face off with each other with little regard to the unique characteristics of selling online.

There were bright spots in the more than 30 top e-retailers reviewed including REI.com and Williams-Sonoma, but even well established brands such as L. L. Bean seem to struggle this holiday selling season.

Not hard to see WHY ecom is in a rut. Mobile is changing everything though few seem to realize the magnititude or sweep of the change. In addition to the Ecommies Report card we created a Social Media Analysis showing most e-retailers follow less than 1% of their followers.

Clearly the conversational nature of the new web is as perplexing to retailers as mobile. The combination of these two big misses, mobile and social, made holiday 2013 lackluster and stuck in the mud. This Curatti.com post shares ideas for how to fix not least of which would be embracing social media marketing and joining a mobile marketing revolution that has little to do with phones.
