Appreciate Bryan’s and Joseph’s comment, but I rarely use Scoop.it as a pass through. More than 90% of the time I’m adding “rich snippets” to content I Scoop.

Rich snippets are “blog” posts that fall between Twitter and the 500 to 1,000 words I would write in Scenttrail Marketing. I often create original content ON Scoop.it because whatever I’m writing falls in the crack between Twitter’s micro blog and what I think of as needing to be on my marketing blog.


I was taught NOT to pass through links on Scoop.it early on by the great curator Robin Good. Robin has well over 1M views on Scoop.it now and his advice along with the patient advice of other great Scoop.it curators has my profile slouching toward 150,000 views.


Bryan is correct that some curators new to Scoop.it haven’t learned the Robin Good lesson yet. I agree it is frustrating to go to a link and not receive anything of value back, to simply need to click on another link. Curators who pass through links won’t scale, so the Darwinian impact will be they will learn to add value or die out.


For my part I always identify my Scoop.it links, probably about half the content I Tweet and about a quarter of my G+ shares. I also routinely share my favorite “Scoopiteers”, great content curators who taught me valuable lessons such as don’t simply pass through links but add “micro blogging” value via rich snippets.


When you follow or consistently share content from a great curator on Scooop.it you begin to understand HOW they shape the subjects they curate. I know, for example, Robin Good is amazing on new tools. Scoop.it anticipated this learning and built in a feature where I can suggest something to Robin.


This is when Scoop.it is at its most crowdsourcing best because I now have an army of curators who know I like to comment on and share content about design or BI or startups and they (other Scoopiteers) keep an eye out for me. There are several reasons Scoop.it is a “get more with less effort” tool and this crowdsourcing my curation is high on the list.


So, sorry you are sad to see Scoop.it links and understand your frustration. You’ve correctly identified the problem too – some curators don’t know how to use the tool yet. I know it is a lot to ask to wait for the Darwinian learning that will take place over generations, but Scoop.it and the web have “generations” that have the half life of a gnat so trust that the richness of the Scoop.it community will win in the end and “the end” won’t take long.


To my fellow Scoop.it curators we owe Bryan and Joseph thanks for reminding us of what Robin Good taught me – add value or your Scoop.it won’t scale. That lessons is applicable to much more than how we use Scoop.it.

Further to Therese Torris' comment, might we ask Scoop.it for a setting that allows us to choose to automatically tweet the post author when we re-scoop? It takes many clicks back and forth to get and add it.

Yes @Peg Corwin I see your "filtering" much like @Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com work as providing value. As Brian shared he discard much more content than he is sharing. I think this builds on Robin's idea of "value" and its meaningful, fast and valuable to those who understand that filtering is the primary activity. I don't think its hard to know this since the second time a customer follows a link of yours or Brian's they know they are following your curation suggestion. On Sunday I thought "pass through" was an unsustainable model. After a day of #startup school I am not so sure. You and Brian are building a themed castle one brick (one share) at a time as surely as I am or anyone else using Scoop.it. Today it feels like a defined link share as you and Brian have described is a valuable service. <br><br>You've hit the primary value AND I often cut the middle man out (something it isn't hard to do ust use Google to search the title). Bryan (Dr V) was complaining about the extra click and that is why I sometimes jump past the pass through too, but since that jump isn't difficult and the oeuvre you create has merit as a whole I think we are simply approach the same problem with a slightly different approach (pass through vs. value add). I think you and Brian are SAVING TIME since you evaluate mor content than you share. <br><br>Despite Dr. V's complaint about seeing Scoop.it links I think that is an important signal and a signals that connects the IDEA of your curation as a whole, so I would say when you drive to Scoop.it using a Scoop.it moniker is a good idea. M

I know this because my friend @MarkTraphagen just bated the trapped :). Weigh In! 

Scoop.it Rocks

Forbes asks us to bet on a smarter web. Not sure that is a bet I'm willing to make. Forbes is asking the wrong question in the wrong way. I love that they are half promoting Scoop.it as the path to a smarter web, but the zero sum nature of their questioning seems limited and goofystupid. 

Goofystupid because the web is the land of AND not OR. We can have millions following Ashton Kutcher and the elegant and beautiful can exist for those willing to find it. Scoop.it makes elegance and grace easier to find. The one (Kutcher's millions of followers) is not necessarily a sign of the apocalypse nor does it subtract from the other (our ability to find and connect with  "like me" tribes.  

 I write this knowing that drawing an imaginary line between good and evil is a common practice (one I've used too), but the web is capable of rewarding small, medium and large. AND the rewards often fit perfectly :). Kutcher gets the millions of fans he wants and little guys like me will get several people to several hundred a day who contribute, think and expand the dialogue about what Internet marketing is and can be. 

Seems fair to me. That Scoop.it is our tool of choice isn't surprising since it helps curate content. Curation is more important than creation for a host or reasons (greater reach, more efficient content marketing testing and cheap). 

Yes Scoop.it ROCKS AND Kutcher has millions of followers. That is NOT the seventh sign and we don't all need to hoard water and can goods :).

Creation Is Hard
I love that line from this great Scoop by Massimo Facchinetti. This post is a great companion to my ScentTrail Social Mentions Study (just posted to Curation Revolution http://sco.lt/6UD0W9).

I shocked my friend @1918's SEO Meetup recently by suggesting the best ratio of content curation to creation is 90% curation to 10% creation. There was an audible gasp in the room.

I explained that curation has greater reach. For every minute of creation you get 3x as much out of using that same minute to curate. I create a lot of content, but, as my companion post proves, even I don't generate as much content as the daily mentions @ScentTrail receives.

 

Content gets shared. Here's the rub and the BIG reason my ratio is set to 90% curation - your are statically more likely to get shares with curated content. Since shares are a content marketing CSF (Critical Success Factor) and what we are playing for curation wins.

Why? I used to work for direct marketing catalogers (when I was a Director of Ecommerce). They taught me to always double down on winners and let losers go. Curation allows you to select content THAT IS ALREADY WINNING.

When I write something I'm betting it will be shared. When I see a great post by Brian Yanish (@MarketingHits), Robin Good (@RobinGood) or Michele Smorgon (@Maxoz) I know their extensive networks of supporters means high shares are likely. With a tool like Scoop.it I can also see the shares.

The irony is I hardly EVER look at existing shares to decide what content to share. I think in terms of WHO first. I have a group of about 50 friends I trust and I have a group of about 5 topics that are near and dear to me. When a friend shares something cool in one of my 5 interest areas I share it.

I agree with this post. Even if you can't CREATE you can CURATE. Even if you CAN create you SHOULD CURATE :). M

SHARING is a key part of this web social economy we are living in right now. It started with content, (message boards, blogs) and now has moved on to cars (Zipcar), bikes (Citi Bike) and beds (AirBnB). 


We are becoming more connected than ever before and OUR online profiles, that WE and OTHERS create about US is driving this sharing economy.


Marty, I know you and I have never met in person but via Scoop.it and social sharing we are connected. Interesting how business is changing.

Agree Brian. When SHARING is at the core many things change such as: competition, how we scale, how we make money and how and what we support.

In a social sharing time we compete in a more collaborative way where rising tides lift all boats. I was shocked to be in a meeting the other day where someone was pithing the idea of unilateral zero sum benefit. Shocked because everyone I work with get it - that doing the right thing is increasingly the right thing to do. I wasn't going to convince this particular manager that WE are stronger than I or ME, but most of us are getting it and that is one of the things driving Scoop.it's success :).M

Curation Collisions Create SURPRISE & Surprise Matters
We are OLD even when we are young now. There is no way to remain YOUNG for very long with so much information chasing us. The next generation lives on their phones the one after may be searching the web and emailing as they look through their Google Glass.

Scoop.it CEO @Guillaume Decugismade an interesting offhand suggestion about curation to me a few weeks ago. Guillaume noted how important curation becomes when we slouch toward the point when everything that ever NEEDS to be written has been written.

Guillaume means what I call "rich snippet" curation or content curation where the hand of the curator is present and accounted for. This is the kind of curation many great teacher helped me learn over the past few years - a skill that feels increasingly important in a way that reminds me of how I felt about SEO before there was a new sheriff in town named Navneet Panda.

Curatti is an example of the HuffPost, BuzzFeed, Mashable multi-author, multi-thread held together by content curation model. I've noted to own the conversaton is to own the traffic. This model is best way to "own the converation" today and that is why there is a Curatti in your future.
