Storytelling is finally being recognized as an essential leadership skill to master. This article by Dan Pontefract gives us a model to help us think about this. He also shares the latest stats on the state of leadership in business and the strategies being used to address the deficit.


As you read through his model, he first tackles the roots of effective leadership. 4 of the 5 attributes he names are developed through building storytelling skills. 


What this means is that focusing on becoming a better storyteller develops/strengthens these leadership attributes. This is very efficient! The author goes on to define these attributes, and as you read them you will see how storytelling fits in.

I find even students in an adult workshop setting remember information better and longer if it is tied to a story. I meet people who were in classes with my ten years ago and the things they remember from the experience almost always begin with "I loved that story you told when....." Which of course makes an good teacher want to gather more good stories! It's a delicious cycle.

What is one of the most powerful leadership/business stories you can share? Yep -- stories of failures, mistakes, and disasters.


Yet they rarely get told in our perfectionist society. Oh to admit we screwed up! Yet sharing stories of your failures humanizes you like no other story. On hearing a mistake story, every listener will say to themselves, "Whew, if he/she can admit to screwing up, so can I." or "Wow, it's not fatal if I make a mistake -- and I'll also learn something valuable in the process."


So take heart -- use these quotes to build your confidence and start sharing a few of your failure stories. They are a good shot in the arm. And thank you to author Ekaterina Walter for putting these quotes together to share with us all.

This is a terrific list by Jacquelyn Smith at Forbes, and a great way to check in on how you are doing at work or what skills you might need to upgrade to realize greater success.


I was checking out this article just because when I realized how much storytelling skills play a role here. In fact, 13 of the 20 success skills can be connected to storytelling. Here they are:


  1. Ability to relate to others -- building storytelling skills builds empathy and builds relationships.
  2. Strong communication skills -- don't be boring or shy: storytelling to the rescue!
  3. Ability to trust others -- well, stories help build trust.
  4. Knowing how and when to show empathy -- building storytelling skills builds empathy skills.
  5. Active listening skills -- effective storytelling is really all about listening to someone else's story first.
  6. Genuine interest in others -- through building storytelling/story evoking skills you have a lot more fun genuinely getting to know someone.
  7. Flexibility -- there's a lot to flexibility, and becoming proficient in storytelling means learning how to shift and change the story in real time (i.e. being flexible!). Hopefully this spills over into other areas of life :)
  8. Ability to persuade others -- well, storytelling is your best tool for this!
  9. Ability to keep an open mind -- I've noticed that as I listen to other people's stories I become much more tolerant. Hopefully, others do too.
  10. Knowing your audience -- telling a great story that connects with others doesn't happen unless you know your audience, which storytelling can help teach you.
  11. Honesty -- if you are unable to tell an honest and authentic story, you are toast. Need I say more?
  12. Awareness of body langauge -- as you learn to craft and tell your stories, you become more aware of how your own body language helps you tell the story (or how to move your body to better tell the story) and the body language of others.
  13. Ability to be supportive and motivate others -- which is one of the core purposes for telling stories. Working on stories helps you do this more effectively.


OK, I know storytelling won't solve all the worlds woes, or all the issues at work. But it can take you far! There are more insights to grab in this article so don't miss it.

This is a question that each person active on social media should ask himself a day or another. Have you ever thought? [note mg]

 

How many hours have you spent adding buttons, gadgets and widgets to your new blog or website? You research the right tools, share buttons, share bars, analytic tracking tools and more. You install them with a hope and a prayer that someone somewhere is going to use them.

 

However, unfortunately many business leaders find they don’t get used. The share buttons sit on their site with the lonely zero or default +1. Chances are your pocket book or wallet might be feeling a little lonely too.

 

What if you took the same time you spend on the share bars, share buttons and tools and instead first focus on something worthy of a share? I know it sounds like a crazy concept because after all it’s far easier to focus on the bright shiny objects, geeky tools and data analytics.

 

Trust me, I am a data junkie and could literally spend all day helping my clients dig into the heads of their target audiences with a goal of embedding their brand in their brains!

This article is not written for most mainstream businesses -- yet is has a powerful message about the role of stories in battling stereotypes,  opening minds, and creating change. So I think there are direct business applications.


The author shares how storytelling from constituents can have a tremendous positive impact on the public policies related to them. This is the same dynamic companies wrestle with internally with shift attitudes and opinions, and has relevance when working with customers.


If the insights shared here work for combating poverty and other deeply entrenched social problems, they will work for your business.

Oh this is so cool! My good friend and biz story buddy Madelyn Blair is interviewed here by Annette Simmons (author of The Story Factor) where she talks about how to harvest our stories for wisdom. 


This is particularly important for leadership -- but also really for anyone in business who wants to maximize their work with business stories and being a compelling storyteller.


There are many qualities I love about Madelyn. She's brilliant and her book Riding the Current focuses on how we can stay up to speed in this age of information overload. In particular, she discusses how stories can help us continually engage with learning, and develop wisdom.


She talks about other topics in this interview, too -- like social media and its connection to storytelling. Plus she shares with everyone an activity any group can do to elevate mood, reveal core values, and find/transfer wisdom. Yeah!


Madelyn arrives tomorrow for a visit -- we're taking Bo Eason's storytelling workshop over the weekend, then heading to Los Angeles for meetings and a day-long get together of other biz story professionals. I can't wait to hang out with my buds, get inspired from sharing our work and progress, and be with everyone in person instead of via Skype.

Here is a terrific primer on leadership and storytelling that articulates the difference betwwen a leader who tells stories, and a leader who tells stories and moves people to action. And of course, it's the ability to move people to action with your stories that makes the diffeerence.


The author, Paul Mudd, discusses how leaders (read entrepreneurs, business owners and nonprofit directors) share stories to transmit knowledge, values, and life lessons. Of course, that means leaders need to be self-aware and comfortable sharing their personal stories. Mudd does a good job addressing this.


I remind people however that before a leader can tell tell tell stories, they have to earn the right to do so first. And that is not necessarily the priviledge of their position. Instead they need to cultivate the ability to listen to stories first, because listening is the first storytelling skill to master.


I just finished co-facilitating a leadership retreat with 56 women with friend and colleague Madelyn Blair. The entire 2-days we only use story-based tecniques and story listening as the foundation. The results are amazing and this is year 5 of deliving the retreat.

I am a little of both, the story teller in me talks about the intelligent of the human spider and how they want to be accepted for who they are spiders and become equal among the humans. The story doer in me creates the materials from my stroy about the spider.

Hey John! Many thanks for the comment and additional insights. Glad this post struck a nerve :) No matter what the profession, I always encourage people to evoke a story first ("Tell me about a time when...") and then deeply listen to the story being told. This is the best way to build empathy and learn what it is like to walk a mile in your customer's shoes. Realtor's have tremendous opportunities here that will build long lasting relationships.
