Killing Your Brand Is Easy
Small to Medium Sized Businesses (SMBs) have shipping ALL WRONG. They want cheap shipping. Shipping is a battleground and trying to save money there is often tripping over $100 bills to pick up pennies.

This G+ post shares the wrong questions being asked in the wrong ways by many SMBs. I like FedEx even for TINY companies because they immediately look BIGGER and more trustworthy with FedEx attached.

Things still go BUMP in the night with FedEx, but we trust THEY will make it right. I don't mind checking a tracking number and working with FedEx to solve a shipper's problem. I won't CONSIDER hopping in my car and running to the post office to attempt to do the same for USPS.

The brands live in different places in my head. FedEx has done many more good turns that bad. USPS has delivered more than they failed too, but when they fail its always MISERABLE trying to straighten it out.

All things being equal, and they never are, I can make a solid branding argument for why any online business should ship FedEx with triggers for free ground and air.

  • Leave Room For THEM (visitors & customers) - As User Generated Content (UGC) becomes increasingly important its important to build in ROOM for comments, reviews and other UGC. UGC needs an ASK and the room to curate and share results of the ask.

  • Every Single System & Process you build for YOU, build 2 for them. Can users follow each other? Can users share a profile? Can users share content ideas and content easily? What is your social reward system for content shares.

  • Social Graphics - there is a reason people in the army wear rank. Wearing "social rank" immediately says who someone IS with a single graphic. Easier to trust social avatars when they are similarly grounded with graphics earned and proudly socially displayed. Social graphics reward those who've earned them AND set the stage for the next generation of people aspiring to "be like them" so a double win.

  • Build an Ambassadors area - ambassadors are so important to creating and sustaining online community. Ambassadors are volunteers wiling to sacrifice to JOIN and ADVOCATE you and your ideas. One CSF our startup Curgami is working on is how to quickly identify a website's 1% Contributors and 9% Supporters. Once identified GIVE THEM JOBS and a special place to "hang out".

  • Curate & Collaborate More, Create Less = more "blank pages" - design is an important wrapper, but web design can become an obstruction too. If you curate a "Member of the Month" feature leave room to fill up as you go. Maybe this month's feature sits on top of 3 previous months. The more face-time you can build for THEM the more social shares and support your online community earns.

The purpose of social media is to connect, to BE SOCIAL. Better to NOT be on social media than to be on social and look like an arrogant snob. Not being on social can be forgiven. Being a snob in this day an age is difficult to forgie.

You Know Your Company Is A Social Media Snob If...

* You follow less than 50% of your Twitter followers.
- Following a tiny % of your followers is the ultimate snobbery because it limits communication (you can't DM unless you follow) and you can't REWARD unless you follow. 
- When an expert in your area with 10x the following as your company has (at the moment) follows you FOLLOW THEM BACK!!

* You company doesn't Retweet.
- When you Retweet you share someone's take. You are saying, "this is good enough to share" and that statement is a reward and and a way to "mentor" your space.

* Your company doesn't respond to @yourcompany notes.
- Not responding in a timely way to @yourcompany notes is an EPIC customer service fail.

* Your company isn't on GPlus.
- Time to come in for the big win AND Gplus is the most disruptive social net because of its proximity to high yield SEO (duy its GOOGLE) and most business verticals are nascent on GPlus because there is a learning curve.

* Your company isn't having conversations.
- If you are still using social media to push messages without listening and responding you look either clueless or a snob (and neither of those are good).

* Your Company isn't on Instagram or Pinterest.
- Marketing communication is becoming highly visual so to not be on either Instragram or Pinterest is snobby since it feels like insisting we continue to do things the old "talk about ourselves to ourselves" way. 

* Your company isn't creating video.
- Video is highly widget-ized and so easy to share content. Video is also a more universal language. I may not speak english but video, done right, can be a cross cultural tool.  


* Your company[s SMM is highly scripted.
- Days of scripting every interaction with customers is long gone.  

Don't be a social media snob either by intention or ignorance because being a SNOB on social media is the wrong signal to send...always.

Friend asked a great question but in the wrong way. Social Media isn't important to me in and of itself, but each social media channel can help communicate marketing messages and thus become valuable and important.

Key is "matching the hatch" to borrow a fly fishing term.

Matching the hatch puts the right kind of content, what Gary Vaynerchuk calls "native content', on each social net when THAT information is important to communicating a marketing message. Here is how I answered:

Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish.

If I want comments and discussion GPlus.
If I want feedback from friends Facebook.
If I want to generally test Scoop.it.
If I want a "set it and forget it" content solution Paper.li.
If I have something happening now or want to newsjack Twitter.
To raise money on creative or gaming projects Kickstarter.
If I want to share videos YouTube.

If I want to serialize stories Storify.
If I want to test an infographic Pinterest. 
If I want to do something with audio then SmartCloud.
If I want to create sustainable and potentially "evergreen" content then I use WP blogs. Content becomes "evergreen" based on how it performs (views, shares, conversions).
If I want to sell something ecom then Shopify. 

Match the hatch to get the most from your content, your growing social media tribe, your time and content marketing and curation efforts.

North Carolina Museum Of Art and Art of Internet Marketing
Kudos to whoever is managing the digital marketing team at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA). I got a nice tweeted thank you for my Wall Street, Texans and a Thief story about the Porsche By Design exhibit (http://sco.lt/6mfIMD ).

I visited Porsche By Design yesterday as I attempt to wander my way through the CrowdFunde business plan, but that is another story. NCMA's web team included a Win A Porsche raffle (so a viral contest) and some of the most amazing pictures of cars I've ever seen. KUDOS!

The didn't include the picture above, but I wanted to take a moment and share Internet marketing image tips learned during my 7 year Director of Ecommerce tenure. The picture above makes a great HERO (largest images on webpage are called 'heroes") because:

* High contrast (white car with red car in immediate background). 
* Action since the photographer is focusing and people are milling.
* People milling create interest. Note how none of the "milling people" are looking AT the camera so they don't distract since we would follow their eye sight lines if they were looking at the camera). 
* The milling crowd moves out and then back into the white car because of the way the RED CAR is pointed (brilliant again). 
* The car becomes a huge POINTER, so putting a CTA (Call-To-Action) under it would get lots of clicks. 
* The photographer becomes a pointer too since many would click anything immediately below him.  

* Gaze follows the photographer’s camera and the sight lines of people in the picture (note the guy LOOKING at the photographer who is focusing on the car = BRILLIANT).  

This photograph is GEINUS since it creates excitement, provides amazing pointers that would direct visitor eyes to Calls-To-Action and its basic color, high contrast would work well within any web design. 

My question is are you thinking about your hero images this deeply? If not you are NUTS since serendipity is not a scalable Internet marketing strategy (lol). Quick tips for Heroes:

* Remember to look for pointers that will direct your visitors’ gaze. 
* We look at PEOPLE more than things. 
* We also look WHERE people are looking. 
* We really LOOK at babies, but same rules apply (we look where they look). 
* The direct gaze at the camera is welcoming and creates engagement.

* Two people talking heads turned away is a disaster (excludes visitors). 
* Don't over use the direct gaze idea. 
* Crowds can work, as they do here, but be aware that visitors will follow their sight lines too. 
* When people's sight lines aren't available we look for and find other directional clues. 

This last bullet is the real RUB of using images on your website. THINK about how any image moves visitors to the next step. Images (and video) can help or hurt your website's goals. Follow these simple tips and images will HELP move visitors to subscribers, contributors, advocates and buyers.

* Solve Brand Conflicts.
* Tease Clicks Don't Drown Them.

* Test Video Marketing.
* Align Website Nonverbals.
* People and Stories Sell not Cool Tech.

This last bullet is the hardest to convince #startups and #smbs. Real estate agents want to show their MLS widget, the same widget every other real estate agent has. Startups want to show their widget.

PEOPLE and STORIES are what makes great website content because we BUY with EMOTION and JUSTIFY with LOGIC.

My second Curatti.com Editors of Chaos post is about the strange alchemy that is Internet marketing, a alchemy that researchers into every business department, silo and idea. If a paradox is something that seems one way and in fact IS another then Internet marketing is paradox rich.

Knowing a paradox is a form of understanding the secret rules of the game. Vampires don't come out in the day, don't cast shadows and can be killed with wooden stakes are rules that govern the "vampire paradox".

Time Management
Time is a TACTIC many Internet marketers forget or don't fully utilize. Here are 5 ways we've learned to tell time:

Time Tip #1: What's Happening NOW?
The web is becoming more and more obsessed with what is happening now. Why? Not sure and who cares (lol). The closer to "real time" your content the more authentic and real it becomes. We use this in our favor in three ways:

* Note and share when content is scaling fast.
* Records are important even when they are YOUR records. Fastest, biggest, most are valuable words in Internet marketing. They are also TIME based. Use fast, faster, fastest to help your content scale.
* Now slips away, but using time parameters provides benchmarkes and scale. Earlier I Tweeted about a Haiku Deck that reached 225 views the fastest and then included (12 hrs).

Time Tip #2: Use History 
The web's time is always NOW, but you can create interesting juxtapositions with the past. When your following reachers the NY Times 1950 subscription level NOTE IT. When you compare a modern web EVENT to a past "real world" event you gain gravitas and understanding. BTW, good luck finding NYT circulation in 1950.

Time Tip #3: Process Is Product
Easy to forget that whatever you are doing NOW is, when published and shared, a product. This is why I like multiple publishing platforms (blogs, Scoop.it, G+ are my most frequently used platforms). Sharing your process as close to CREATION as possible brings the NOW into your content (see tip #1).  

Time Tip #4:  Redux Is Truth
We lucky few Internet marketers are like scientists. We test, test and test content, ideas and memes. When you find something that pops DOUBLE DOWN and keep doubling down (publishing a post about the post, publishing a II or III version) until you exhaust upside. Once you reach the point of diminishing return make a note and move on. First time ANYTHING can be a fluke. If you can repeat the same or better results over and over you've found EVERGREEN content you need to OWN. 

Time Tip #5: Don't Forget TIME Is In The Web's Algorithm
Everyday millions of things happen online (maybe billions). With that much NEW going on TIME becomes a way to TRUST you (or not). every day you build or lose clout, reputation and status (authority). Crying over yesterday's losses is foolish and expensive. Gear up, learn and move on. Always remember you can't do anything TODAY the web won't remember TOMORROW.
