Jennifer Slingerland's comment, November 20, 10:07 PM
It isn’t at all surprising to hear that Corizon is profiteering from sick prisoners; if it hadn’t been them, it certainly would have been someone else. Unfortunately, this entire situation brings forth the question of how much the public actually cares about prisoners. Are the people who’ve committed crimes in our nation worthy of the care that it takes to say ‘yes, this is absolutely wrong and these people are entitled to healthcare?’ Or would the cries of outrage begin as soon as the issue is mentioned to the general public? In a nation where the Affordable Healthcare Act is constantly under fire for providing healthcare to innocent citizens in the U.S., I can’t imagine that many would agree with Brave New Foundation’s Behind Bars campaign. Then again, a large majority of the country disagrees with gun control and then acts shocked when elementary schools are shot up, so who knows exactly how the public would feel about this one. If I were to make a wager, it’d probably be that this campaign will have a steep hill to climb before they begin seeing any progress.

Understanding the progress you're making on social media can be rapidly overwhelming: not only are there chances you're on more than one social network but you're also likely to manage pages on top of profiles.

These tools are great and can help you track progress on a lot of KPI's.

Which is also why they're dangerous.

Don't get me wrong: I'm an analytical, data-driven guy so I'm a strong believer that data trumps opinions most of the time. But my point is that it's easy to get lost and confused by all the social KPI's you can track:

- followers

- retweets

- likes

- clicks

- favorites

- replies

- lists

- ....

You name it...

As Mark Schaefer put it - perhaps better than anyone else - social media engagement is not a strategy. It's only a path to building brand awareness or increasing leads and sales.

So while these tools are very useful, you still need to connect your social KPI's with ROI KPI's to demonstrate - or not - that your social media metrics' growth converts into something that has positive business returns

Very often, this will mean creating conversion hooks for your social media audience to become either a subscriber, a lead or a user - which is why you need a content hub for your social media publishing. Two trends are at work here:

1. Social Media Publishing and Content Marketing are more and more overlapping as social helps amplify content and content helps engage followers.

2. Social Selling and Inbound Marketing are driving more use of social media and more content publishing activity as a way to grow revenue.

So looking at these tools is a great opportunity to think about your overall goals and how to connect social media and content marketing in a coherent strategy to achieve ROI.

How Content Curation Informs Content Creation

How Content Curation Informs Content Creation | Atabrine James Simmons; Enigma of Mankind. | Scoop.it

If you are actively curating content as a business strategy, you are sitting on a great source of guidance to help you pick good topics. Of course you’ll monitor success of your own content over time. But there’s more. You should keep tabs on a wider range of content to expand your purview.

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, October 28, 11:37 AM

Content curation is not just a placeholder for the lack of inspiration or time to create great content. While it certainly can help publish relevant good content in the lack of a brilliant original content idea, it's also a great way to generate some

As this post highlights in the context of a content marketing strategy, you will understand what type of content you need to create if you consistently watch what's going on in your industry through regular content curation. By publishing the content you've curated, you will also generate and measure reactions from your target audience. Think of it as real life market study for content strategists.

So as I've often commented, this is the reason why content curation often is the easiest strategy to start as part of a content plan: not only because it comes naturally by building on what you already do (read content on your topics of expertise) but also because it makes the original content creation part easier and better.

Barbara Vermaas's curator insight, October 31, 5:43 AM

Content curation is de 1e stap; dit geeft inzicht in wat er al beschikbaar is, en vooral, in wat er nog nodig is. En dus: geeft inzicht op welk gebied je content creation zou kunnen/moeten inzetten.

Alan Eustace, Google, Jumps From Top of Stratosphere, Falling Faster Than The Speed of Sound | Atabrine James Simmons; Enigma of Mankind. | Scoop.it

A well-known computer scientist parachuted from a balloon near the top of the stratosphere on Friday, falling faster than the speed of sound and breaking the world altitude record set just two years ago.

The jump was made by Alan Eustace, 57, a senior vice president at Google. At dawn he was lifted by a balloon filled with 35,000 cubic feet of helium, from an abandoned runway at the airport here.

For a little over two hours, the balloon ascended at speeds up to 1,600 feet per minute to an altitude of 135,908 feet, more than 25 miles. Mr. Eustace dangled underneath in a specially designed spacesuit with an elaborate life-support system. He returned to earth just 15 minutes after starting his fall.

“It was amazing,” he said. “It was beautiful. You could see the darkness of space and you could see the layers of atmosphere, which I had never seen before.”

Mr. Eustace cut himself loose from the balloon with the aid of a small explosive device and plummeted toward the earth at a speeds that peaked at more than 800 miles per hour, setting off a small sonic boom heard by observers on the ground.

Pinterest: The Social Search Goldmine

Pinterest: The Social Search Goldmine | Atabrine James Simmons; Enigma of Mankind. | Scoop.it
Search marketers have always understood and appreciated the incredible ranking power behind social media properties. Sites like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter always had an impressive ability to rank highly in Google for extremely competitive terms due to their strong domain authority.

But while it is great to capture that high ranking position, it often presented a challenge when it came to actually driving that traffic back to the brand site. It was either a challenge due to the ability to place prominent gateway links on the social property pages itself, or there was really no purpose or logical reason to send the user to an additional page.

Take YouTube, for example. The video site is a great property for capturing “how to” and instructional queries; however, the only way to get the viewer to your brand site is via an overlay on the video or a link inside the description. Furthermore, the searcher’s actual query – e.g. “how to remove grass stains” — is often already answered in the video itself, thus eliminating the need for further research (or a visit to the website).

A new player is emerging in the social search landscape and it’s Pinterest. According to the article, over the last 12-18 months, the number of search engine results containing Pinterest content has nearly doubled. Its biggest search topics have to do with beauty, hair, and home, which has seen an increase of over 400 percent year-over-year. That is insane! Pinterest users going in with a certain mindset when searching for topics. They know what they want to view and fully expect to be brought to the product page when they click on the image or link they are viewing. A big part that is playing in the success of Pinterest is that it is delivering high quality and value traffic. The charts within the article show the overwhelming dominance that Pinterest has in terms of referral traffic. I have never used Pinterest before. I mainly thought of it as a site for females because most topics of pins are beauty, hair, clothing, and other topics that I am obviously not interested in. But it appears that it is becoming more than that now. I could probably go in with the mindset of looking for sports related pins or helpful workout tips which would make the site more interesting for me to use. However, I am trying to step away from social media and other networks so I doubt I will ever enter the world of Pinterest. It is interesting to see that it is making a rise in terms of social searching.

Reblogged from CHAPTER 21.:

To my non-Australian followers I recommend this heart wrenching documentaryabout what is perceived to be “the lucky country”. It is a sobering look at the treatment towards our nations First People, and the ongoing mistreatment that occurs today. Despite having an awareness of these issues having grown up in the Northern Territory, a place where Aboriginal people are segregated in gated communities in Darwin, I still felt a great sense of shame and sadness being confronted with these images and stories of those within our community being controlled by racist policies of successive and present Governments.
