A PrAACtical Literacy Activity for Beginning Communicators | AT, UDL, AAC | Scoop.it
We’ve been having a great time supporting beginning communicators and gently modeling how they can be involved in literacy learning activities. In this post, we share a super simple activity to build alphabet knowledge and letter-sound correspondence. It has worked well (or fairly well) for beginning communicators who: Are just learning to establish cause-effect relationships…

More Ideas for Supporting Pre-Intentional Communicators

More Ideas for Supporting Pre-Intentional Communicators | AT, UDL, AAC | Scoop.it
This month, we’ve been talking about how to support individuals who are at the earliest levels of communication: the perlocutionary or pre-intentional stage. Although everyone goes through a stage at which behavior is considered communicative only because the partner perceives it that way, some individuals linger there for months or years. What steps can SLPs…

Julie Kestler's curator insight, December 21, 2013 6:46 PM

I have a number of students with multiple disabilities I am trying to create meaningful opportunities for communication  throughout the day, not just when I am working in the classroom.  One of the best methods I have suggested to the classroom teacher has been to make visual representations of songs sung daily and let the student "choose" via eyegaze, reach, or some other mutually noted reaction the teacher and I have observed.  The classroom teacher has taken this suggestion and run with it.  Music seems to be highly motivating to the vast majority (though not all) of my students.  I am looking for more suggestions the classroom teacher can easily incorporate into her daily routine.
