Cb Bowman's insight:

That the LinkedIn group (Corporate Executive Coaches — https://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=4472617&trk=anet_ug_hm) has grown to 220 members? Here are the important things to notice about this group:
• All members are senior level EXECUTIVE COACHES working with c-suite clients.
• Everyone contributes top quality information
• There is no spamming
• We are very selective in who we approve as members of this group.
• No-one is trying to sell you anything (occasionally we shamelessly mention the Association of Corporate Executive Coaches—which many are members)=)!

Donna Karlin is bringing her School of Shadow Coaching® Advanced Coach Training to Boston, Mass. on April 23 - 24, 201

Shadow Coaching is an approach and technique that Donna created as a result of her work with heads of state, ambassadors, CEO’s, Physicians, and corporate and non-profit leaders and professionals around the world. It relies on in-the-moment observation and coaching to build skills, adjust habits, dive deep into individual barriers and help key people in organizations by using laser coaching to quickly identify what they are doing as they are doing it. It leverages clients’ strengths more effectively and helps leaders shape their teams and cultures to deal with immediate challenges as well as address emerging opportunities.

Cb Bowman's insight:

One of her goals is to move coaching to be more immediate, more based on direct observation, more practical and focused, and more applied with leaders who can change their workplaces and the world. Colleagues have been after her to come to the Boston area to offer her two-day certification workshop in Shadow Coaching.  As a result Donna will be in Boston on April 23rd and 24th.

Coaches can work with the client in the context of their environments so they work with the experience of the learning as much as the learning itself. This workshop is ideal for those coaches who are interested in moving from formulaic and procedural methods to being able to focus on their client's specific situation, need, 'Shadows' and opportunities and provide them with a unique and personalized service. You will develop your capability to engage in "real time", deep, and reflective, observational, shadow coaching.

If you want to learn cutting-edge, practical techniques of gathering actionable data for in-the-moment leadership and professional development then don’t miss this workshop!

It is taking place in Wellesley at a very reasonable fee in an informal but practical learning environment with participants who are experienced organizational coaches. Go to http://www.schoolofshadowcoaching.com/Boston.html to register. The program will be limited to a small number of participants for an intimate and personalized learning experience.

Cb Bowman's insight:

• 77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means. SEO stands for "Search-Engine Optimization"
• 27% identified "gigabyte" as an insect commonly found in South America. A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.
• 42% said they believed a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship." A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
• 23% thought an "MP3" was a "Star Wars" robot. It is actually an audio file.
• 18% identified "Blu-ray" as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos.
• 15% said they believed "software" is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs.
• 12% said "USB" is the acronym for a European country. In fact, USB is a type of connector.

LinkedIn now lets you block other members

LinkedIn now lets you block other members | Association of Corporate Executive Coaches | Scoop.it
The social network delivers the long-requested feature, which lets users do away with unwanted attention from other members. Read this article by Richard Nieva on CNET News.

Cb Bowman's insight:
A letter to LINKEDIN!

One year ago - without any prior warning - after being a long time member and a frequent contributor who was consistently rated among the “Top Influencers This Week”–– I was Blocked & Deleted from a group that still to this date has no published Group Rules.

I was Blocked & Deleted from this group not because I was "guilty" of posting SPAM - and not because I was "guilty" of violating any of the group's rules (there are no posted rules for this group) - but simply because the owner chose to Block & Delete myself (and approximately 200 other group members at the same time) in order to put us all at a competitive disadvantage.

Being Blocked & Deleted from one single group by one single group owner/manager/moderator triggers LinkedIn's Site Wide Auto Moderation (SWAM) policy – and suddenly ALL of your postings to ALL of the other groups that you are a member of on LinkedIn are now “pended” until a member of that particular group’s management team approves it for posting.

Becoming SWAM’d effectively hamstrings your ability to participate in LinkedIn discussions – because when all of your posts to all of your groups are now “pended” it can take days or weeks (if at all) for your contributions to appear – by which time your comments appear very much out of context and out of date.

It’s my understanding that LinkedIn's SWAM policy was deployed as a way of fighting against the SPAM & BOTS that infect mostly poorly moderated and very large groups.

I've come to understand that LinkedIn purposely designed SWAM to empower a single group owner/manager/moderator with unjustified reach and jurisdiction over members precisely because LinkedIn wanted SWAM to amplify a single signal of suspected SPAM or BOT and to turn that suspicion into the largest signal possible - because by doing so SWAM cuts down on the time, effort & money required to moderate groups - or the need to employ thoughtful moderators at all (particularly for Open Groups).

But LinkedIn's SWAM policy has turned out to be just a small swat for the serious BlackHat (illegal) cyber underworld SPAMmer, BOT maker, shill, or shifty internet marketer.

In fact there was recently a post (on the LinkedIn Groups Product Forum) regarding a price list from a provider of bulk fake accounts to the BlackHat market - offering 1,000 LinkedIn accounts/profiles - already registered with matching Yahoo or Hotmail addresses - for just $120.

So it's not the BlackHat cyber underworld SPAMmers, BOT makers, shills, or shifty internet marketers who are being suppressed & muzzled by LinkedIn's SWAM policy - they just start using another fake account.

As currently configured SWAM is a blunt & heavy handed tool and it’s the regular members like myself who are the “dolphins caught in the tuna net” by SWAM.

SWAM reforms could and should be introduced in order to help mitigate the “law of unintended consequences” for such a sledge hammer approach to moderating comments in LinkedIn groups.

Reforms such as a "3 Strikes and You’re Out" system - or a points system for cumulative online violations - or time limits for a first <Block & Delete> offense.

LinkedIn’s SWAM policy also requires more effective education for owners/managers/moderators – and better explanations regarding the need for well defined Group Rules – and better explanations regarding the implications of using the <Block & Delete> feature unless there are very strong reasons for doing so.

Adoption of even some of these SWAM reforms could go a long way towards minimizing the number of people who will be wrongly SWAM'd in the future by a group owner/manager/moderator who is misusing the <Block & Delete> feature - and would also help to address some of the injustice associated with those who have been unfairly SWAM’d in the past.

From a member of LinkedIN and supported by millions of users.

Will this new feature choke the same horrifying results.

A very often requested feature has been implemented.  Users can now block a specific profile.  Although if you are public on Google, elements of your profile can be viewed
