'Wearable robots' give improved mobility to people who are paralyzed | Assistive Technology for Education | Scoop.it
When Michael Gore stands, it’s a triumph of science and engineering.
Diana Petschauer's insight:

Awesome...

"The technology has many nicknames. Besides “wearable robot,” the inventions also are called “electronic legs” or “powered exoskeletons.” This version, called Indego, is among several competing products being used and tested in U.S. rehab hospitals that hold promise not only for people such as Gore with spinal injuries, but also those recovering from strokes or afflicted with multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy."

It's no wonder people are interested in exoskeletons. Not only do they tap into our lust for the technology of science fiction movies, but they also significantly impact the lives of individuals with disabilities."

Portable Text to Braille Reader Concept

Portable Text to Braille Reader Concept | Assistive Technology for Education | Scoop.it

This concept would provide accessibility immediately for paper textbooks, tests, magazines, menus, and other documents or materials that are not available in Electronic format.

Diana Petschauer's insight:

This innovation would be excllent for accessibility in school as well as the community and workplace. Refreshable Braille displays (in conjunction with text to speech) are efficient to use when a book or document is available in electronic format, however so many still remain in paper format, and inaccessible to Blind readers who need Braille. This would provide instant access! While a refreshable braille display offers access to a computer or iPad, this concept (a portableBraille Reader) would continue to provide instant access at school, in the workplace, at a restaurant, in a meeting, etc.

Accessibility Upgrade: EPUB, Libraries, and Ebook Accessibility

Accessibility Upgrade: EPUB, Libraries, and Ebook Accessibility | Assistive Technology for Education | Scoop.it

The new EPUB 3 standard could promise a sea change, enabling publishers to integrate accessibility features into their ebook production workflows, creating ebooks that are immediately available to everyone, including customers with print disabilities.

“Ten years ago, it was ‘How can the Library for the Blind produce more books?’ Kerscher says. “Now, the thought is that all of the books published each year have the potential to be accessible right out of the box. That’s just mind-boggling to a person who has had such restricted access to information.”

Via Chuck Hitchcock
Diana Petschauer's insight:

The Technology Exists, there is NO excuse. Accessible textbooks and learning materials need to be provided by publishers for ALL learners, of every ability, using what ever Assistive Technology is required/ preferred/ desired. Schools and organizations NEED to be on board, and need to agree NOT to purchase books or learning materials unless they are accessible to ALL students and individuals. This includes testing materials. Every student can learn efficiently and express their intelligence and knowledge once they have equal access. They have a right to equal access.

Make a difference, promote access for ALL students. This is the time for positive change.

Hillary Brumer's curator insight, April 17, 10:24 AM
If accessibility features wer immediately available to everyone out of the box- they would truly be universal, and there would be no limits to how information is delivered to everyone. Empowering? Yes.

Audio-based virtual gaming aims to help the blind navigate

Audio-based virtual gaming aims to help the blind navigate | Assistive Technology for Education | Scoop.it

Diana Petschauer's insight:

iPad: Voiceover and the Refreshabraille 18 for Regular Ed. Teachers& Blind Students

Demonstration of how the iPad and a Refreshabraille 18 can be used as an instructional tool for parents and regular education teachers & Special Ed. teachers. Teachers do not need to read/ type braille to teach a student who uses/reads braille.

Diana Petschauer's insight:

Though these videos are a bit older, they offer a clear picture of how a student can use a Refreshable Braille Display to access every aspect of education; and many educators and special educators are unaware of how this works. A refreshable braille display allows a student or individual to access a computer, iPad, iPod touch, etc. equally to their peers to research the internet, complete homework or handouts, send email, etc., using real-time refreshable Braille. There are many devices and options from several companies (HumanWare, HIMS), this shows one available for free for students who qualify for AIM in their state (from APH). An important factor is that anything a student types in Braille, reflects on the iPad or computer as text, for the teacher to read, and anything the teacher types or scans, shows up as Braille for the student to read. It is typically used with a screen reader such as JAWS, window eyes, or Voice Over on iOS devices, meaning content is also read aloud to a student. I have students in 3rd and 4th grade now using a refreshable braille display to access education; there are no limits with Assistive Technology. :) See the Video above from a teacher, as well as this older one from Chase, a young student: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJWMRlElD1E

World’s first smartphone for blind invented in India

World’s first smartphone for blind invented in India | Assistive Technology for Education | Scoop.it
The most obvious question is how does a smartphone work for people who are blind? The answer in layman terms is its innovative "touchscreen" which converts text and pictures into Braille and raised patterns.
Diana Petschauer's insight:

I am very interested in this innovation becoming a reality, and hope that this technology also encompasses Voice Output guidance. Currently individuals who are Blind combine the iPhone with VoiceOver and a refreshing Braille display, it would be excellent to have these features combined in one device, along with tactile images.

Two Excellent Apps for Communication

Two Excellent Apps for Communication | Assistive Technology for Education | Scoop.it

Individuals who have difficulty with speaking or communicating due to a disability or a condition or accident that hinders their ability to speak, may benefit from using Assistive Chat or Predictable, apps for iOS devices.

Diana Petschauer's insight:

If an individual has difficulty with speaking or communicating due to Apraxia, Aphasia, being deaf or HOH, or even an accident or another condition that may hinder their ability to speak, they may benefit from using these communication apps. Both Assistive Chat and Predictable work very well for someone who may write or type well, and would like to communicate/ converse using text to speech. Combined with word prediction for faster "talking," as well as assistance with spelling, and the ability to add favorite phrases, or use emoticons. Assistive Chat and Predictable apps both offer a person or student the ability to converse with peers socially as they write or type what they want to say and have it spoken aloud. Predictable offers emoticons, handwriting to text, and the ability to send messages via email, text, social networking, etc.
