21 Definitions of Thought Leadership | Assistant Principal | Scoop.it

I add this list by Tracy Sestilly because I made reference to it in another post and I thought it deserves to be scooped too. It warns against the buzzword syndrom of Thought Leadership (true to everything trendy, especially in marketing) and underlines its multifaceted nature.

My key 2 words to define Thought Leadership are "innovation", and "influence". And I know that 2 words are not enough (think about change making, sharing, expertise...) but well, it's about curation here :)

Your definition: welcome !

Administrators: keep these 5 suggestions in mind

Administrators: keep these 5 suggestions in mind | Assistant Principal | Scoop.it

Leadership in education isn't easy and definitely isn't for the faint of heart. Additionally, it's easy to second guess and question how a school leader reacts, responds and makes decisions. In the end, it's really impossible to understand what it's like in the chair without having ever sat in the chair. Having said that, here are some suggestions to keep in mind to make that chair as comfortable as possible:

Parents in poor communities do care about their children’s schooling. Here’s how to get them involved

Parents in poor communities do care about their children’s schooling. Here’s how to get them involved | Assistant Principal | Scoop.it

Let no educator, parent or advocate ever say parents don’t care about how their children do in school. Most really do, and given the right chance, will do all they can to help.  Here in the heart of the nation’s poorest region, in a historic but partially destitute town, parents are gathering regularly to chart a course for better schools, a better community and better lives for their families. It’s happening through a growing program from the national nonprofit group Parents for Public Schools, based in Jackson, but with active chapters in big cities and small towns across the country.

Great teachers want to work for great school leaders.

Great teachers want to work for great school leaders. | Assistant Principal | Scoop.it

Research indicates that students’ race and family income often predict their access to excellent educators. Low-income students and high-need schools tend to have teachers who are less experienced, have fewer credentials and do not demonstrate a track record of success.

"Our research shows that schools with great principals, who build strong, supportive instructional cultures for their teachers and hold teachers and students to high expectations, do a better job of retaining high-performing teachers, regardless of student demographics. So it stands to reason that great principals can also be a critical incentive to attract top teachers to hard-to-staff schools."

It is a great question and not just an American issue. There are likely several reasons, but two I think about are the use of part-time contracts as a fiscal and control tool and many young teachers graduating do not enter teaching. Their degree is valuable outside School.
