Connecting Students and Teachers for Better Learning | Current Research | Scoop.it
Research demonstrates that a sense of social connection can improve learning. In fact, activities that bring students together — like peer tutoring and cooperative learning — have shown a marked increase of up to 75% greater performance on assessments. Teachers who support student-centered learning in this way often make a bigger impact on students’ lives and education than teachers who remain aloof or apart from their students.

A sense of separation from a teacher (and other students) can happen pretty easily in an online environment. It can take a special effort on the part of online teachers to become a “favorite teacher”. David Wiley noted that the impersonal nature of the web is not only easy to slip into, it is sometimes designed into the way LMSs direct pedagogy:

“With the pile of philosophical, conceptual, and empirical evidence showing the social nature of learning and the importance of human relationships (particularly the relationship between teacher and student) in learning and wellbeing, why are we working so hard to automate away any opportunity for these relationships to exist?”

But the truth is that there are a myriad of ways that teachers and students can create digital connections in online classes. A new paper from the Research and Education Department — “Increased Social Connectedness through Digital Peer Learning” — explores several ways that Canvas supports social learning, including:

Reciprocal Teaching
Cooperative Learning

I picked this article because the title alone immediately caught my attention. As I kept reading, the article made some excellent points about the simplest things we can do on a day to day basis in order to "exercise" our brain. My favorite one was #5, which was 'Test your cumulative learning'. Students everywhere make the mistake of pulling an 'all nighter' the day before a really important exam, which actually does more hurt than help. If we use cumulative learning rather than cramming, then we will retain the information better in our long term memory and it will be much easier to retrieve. Another one I found interesting was #1, "Play an Instrument'. It states that if you do that, it will strengthen the connection of the two hemispheres through the corpus callosum, which helps improve brain function regardless of age.

One thing that I pride myself on, is the ability to curate and share the work of others.  I have been blessed with a huge network on social media and I want to use that to not only share my voice, but hopefully the voice of others as well.  There are certain blogs that I like reading all of the time, but I also want to find the “best” stuff that is being shared right now, so if I limit it to what I already know, then it is much harder to find that.  That is why I have a few different spaces to find and share content.  Many people ask me how I “find my stuff”, so I wanted to show and share how I curate information.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) describes close reading in light of the Common Core State Standards.  Close, analytic reading stresses engaging with a text of sufficient complexity directly and examining meaning thoroughly and methodically, encouraging students to read and reread deliberately.  Directing student attention on the text itself empowers students to understand the central ideas and key supporting details.  It also enables students to reflect on the meanings of individual words and sentences; the order in which sentences unfold; and the development of ideas over the course of the text, which ultimately leads students to arrive at an understanding of the text as a whole. (PARCC, 2011, p.7)

An idea that is beginning to gain a lot of favour in educational circles at the moment is the notion of fixed versus growth mindsets, and how they might relate to students and learning. Based on the work of Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck, the idea of mindset is related to our understanding of where ability comes from. It has recently been seized upon by educators as a tool to explore our knowledge of student achievement, and ways that such achievement might be improved.

However, in my work, I have found that the notion of developing a growth mindset is as equally applicable to staff and teacher performance as it is to students. This article begins with a brief discussion about the difference between the two mindsets, what that means for education, and concludes with some ideas for how school leaders might seek to develop a growth mindset amongst their staff.

Teacher spends two days as a student and is shocked at what she learns

 

I have a lot more respect and empathy for students after just one day of being one again. Teachers work hard, but I now think that conscientious students work harder. I worry about the messages we send them as they go to our classes and home to do our assigned work, and my hope is that more teachers who are able will try this shadowing and share their findings with each other and their administrations. This could lead to better “backwards design” from the student experience so that we have more engaged, alert, and balanced students sitting (or standing) in our classes.

In order for the current state of teacher preparation and development to evolve accordingly, the authors recommend professional learning opportunities that echo the type of personalized learning that is recommended for students:

 

- Some element of teacher control over time, place, path and/or pace;

 

- Balance between teacher-defined goals, goals as defined by administration through teacher evaluation efforts, and school and district educational goals;

 

- Job-embedded and meaningful integration into classroom practice;

 

- Competency-based progression."

 

This paper would be a key addition to your Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP).

Education in this country is often the subject of loud and rancorous debate. It is one, however, that most frequently concerns what happens during school hours. But academic and non-academic learning and development don’t stop once the last bell of the day rings. In fact, as any good educator knows, even when a school day is executed perfectly, students will still struggle if they’re not receiving the support they need in the wider community and at home.

Afterschool programs are an important and impactful way to address this issue, as they have the potential to continue and even broaden learning while busy parents complete their workdays. Still, though tossing kids into the cafeteria with some Goldfish Crackers will keep them out of any immediate danger, this is not the kind of approach that will radically affect a student’s future. What, then, does a good afterschool program look like, and what can it do for students – particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds? Let’s take a look.

For at least a decade now, the driving force behind education reform has been data. We talk about collecting data, analyzing data, and making data-driven decisions. All of this data can certainly be useful, helping us notice patterns we might not have seen without aggregating our numbers in some way, looking for gaps and dips and spikes, allowing us to figure out where we are strong and where we need help. In terms of certain academic behaviors, we can quantify student learning to some extent and improve our practice as a result.

And yet, we know this is not enough. We know our students bring with them so many other kinds of data. So many other factors contribute to academic success: the atmosphere in their homes, the demands of their out-of-school school schedule, the physical concerns that distract them, the passions and obsessions that consume them. These things are much harder to measure, so we don’t even try, focusing instead on the things we can convert to numbers.

New teachers vow to do things differently.  They declare that their classroom will be shining beacons of creativity, joy, and engagement. And then something happens.  They step into the system and the system forces them to change too. The light goes out and the cycle is perpetuated.

But for all those teachers where the light goes out, there are a few who remain symbols of hope.  These are the teachers who despite their circumstances in a broken system, somehow remain to connect with students on a human level, and draw out what is best in their students.  These are the teachers who encourage students to pursue their interests and seem to intuitively know different creative strategies to unlock learning in different types of children. These are the teachers students remember 40 years later, when being asked in an interview, “Who influenced you?”  The question becomes, what makes these teacher different? How do they remain steadfast and unshaken while the education system around them seems to spin in insanity?

The difference is empowerment.
