4 Big Social Media Lessons from Small Businesses [INFOGRAPHIC]

4 Big Social Media Lessons from Small Businesses [INFOGRAPHIC] | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

Social Media is not just a method only being utilized by big brands anymore. Small businesses are starting to embrace and implement social techniques on a grander scale.

A 2012 SMB Group Study found that 20% of small businesses use social in an ad hoc, informal way- to generate leads and drive traffic to websites. The study also revealed that 24% of small businesses are using social in strategic and structured way, including data analysis of market trends and customer driven product ideas.

The businesses practicing strategic social media enjoyed a higher level of integration amongst their departments. The largest disparity between the two groups was uncovered in Customer Service. Only 8% of the companies with an informal social media environment had integrated into Customer Service, while an impressive 43% of the strategic social group integrated Customer Service.

That's quite a difference and food for though if your small business just kicking the tire with little or no social presence.

What Are The Habits Of Mind?

What Are The Habits Of Mind? | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

"Habits of Mind are dispositions that are skillfully and mindfully employed by characteristically intelligent, successful people when they are confronted with problems, the solutions to which are not immediately apparent.  When we draw upon these mental resources, the results are more powerful, of higher quality, and of greater significance than if we fail to employ those habits."

Via Beth Dichter
Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 19, 9:40 PM

The Habits of Mind come into play when you think about how to solve problems. They are not performed in isolation. When a problem arises you are drawn to the skills necessary to solve it. As teachers we may choose to use the Habits of Mind as we consider skills we want our students to learn and to use in the classroom. For more information on the habits (with a more thoughtful discussion on each of them) check out Chapter 2 of the book "Learning and Leading with the Habits of Mind" available on the ASCD website at http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/108008/chapters/describing-the-habits-of-mind.aspx.

Anxiety Attack: Conquering the Fear of Math – SchoolBook

Anxiety Attack: Conquering the Fear of Math – SchoolBook | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it
Two professors say we've got to stop sending messages to young children — especially girls — that math is something to fear. Humans are actually hardwired to think mathematically, they say.
Reeda Malik's insight:

Math anxiety refers to feelings of tension and fear that interfere with solving mathematical problems in everyday life and school settings. Math anxiety involves physiological arousal (e.g., sweaty palms, racing heart), negative thoughts (e.g., “I am just not a math person.”), escape and/or avoidance behaviors (e.g., developing pains to get out of math class), and, when the individual cannot escape the situation, poor performance.

The negative impacts of math anxiety are enormous. Math-anxious students do not see the value of math for everyday life, they participate — and learn — less in math classes, receive lower grades in math, and take fewer math classes in high school and college. These patterns are especially troubling given that mathematical proficiency is becoming increasingly important for full economic opportunity and meaningful participation in society. Consider that only one-third of high school seniors in the U.S. have the mathematical proficiency to compete in a global market and respond to global challenges.

Where are we going wrong?

There are lots of different pathways to math anxiety. A growing body of research suggests that parents and teachers might transmit their own math anxiety to children. At home, comments such as, “I was a terrible math student, it’s in our genes” send the signal that it isn’t important to do well in math. In the classroom, math anxiety has been linked to teachers who are hostile, hold gender biases, are indifferent, or who embarrass students in front of peers.

More important, in our opinion, is the role we collectively play as a society. Let’s face it: it is socially acceptable to say you are bad at math whereas there is a social stigma attached to having poor literacy skills. Kids are consistently bombarded with messages that math is something to fear. T-shirts proudly announce, “Allergic to Algebra” or “I’m too pretty for math.” Even Barbie had something to say about math being tough. This is simply not okay. There is no reason kids should be any more anxious about math than other academic subjects.

So what do we do about math anxiety?

First and foremost we have got to stop sending messages to our young children — especially our girls — that math is something to fear. Humans are actually hardwired to think mathematically; we are born with basic building blocks to do math. We need stronger teacher preparation programs that focus on building mathematically competent and confident teachers. We need to provide better supports to our teachers and school leaders to prevent and reduce math anxiety from taking root. We also need to better integrate math into every day routines. Just as we encourage teachers and parents to read with kids, math activities need to become daily habits. Board games, playing cards, and dominoes all have potential for enhancing mathematical thinking.

What do we do about kids who already have math anxiety? Children (and adults!) first need to recognize the signs of math anxiety: the sweaty palms, the racing heart, the negative thoughts. Then, kids need techniques to conquer their anxiety in real-time.

Common strategies include relaxation techniques (e.g., breathing exercises or guided imagery) and positive self-talk (e.g., “I can do math.” “I can take my time and find the correct answer.”)

A special note to teachers: Remember that kids with math anxiety — like all struggling math learners — are going to need lots of reassurance and more time and support than their peers to develop good math habits, skills, and strategies. Be patient! With the right supports and attitudes, we can teach our children to love and excel at math. We all have a role to play in turning math into the one four-letter word children use loudly and proudly.

Imagery in Social Media & How to Leverage Visual Content [infographic] | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

While the origins of social media can be traced back to the late 1970s, the medium didn’t really begin to develop until 1993, with the world wide web.

From here, we never looked back. But even as far as 2006 social media was predominately a text-based pursuit. So what’s changed since?

The global domination of YouTube, the rise of Pinterest and the success of Instagram has made social media an increasingly visual platform. And with good reason: users are far more likely to engage with brands who post images and video, and, subsequently, both Facebook and Twitter have taken steps to better-incorporate this content into their channels over the past twelve months.

This infographic takes a closer look at how the shift to a visual social world has developed, and includes six tips for brands on how to use these tools to bolster their marketing strategy.

To help small businesses tackle the daunting task of developing a social media presence (without feeling overwhelmed), Intuit has created a "Path to Social Success in 2013" infographic.

The 12-month plan divides the goal of achieving social success into quarters, each focusing on a specific goal:

First quarter: Take social media inventory.Second quarter: Work on relationships.Third quarter: Integrate everything.Fourth quarter: Look backward, then forward.

For each quarter, Intuit then lists big ideas for each month to reach that goal.

For example, the first quarter is about taking social media inventory, so January is dedicated to assessing your social fitness; February, to revisiting your social goals; and March, to establishing ways to measure success, such as number of followers and fans, traffic to website, social mentions across platforms, share of social conversations, and social influence.

Content is evolving and marketers need to expand their content marketing strategy to include visual elements into their overall mix.

The problem is that customers have less time due to the current state of information overflow. In addition, the fast paced world of social media has forced us to learn to digest information faster and sometimes even at a glance. This visual consumption of data lets us know the big message and allows us to decide whether or not we need to keep reading.

The future of marketing is found in photos, videos, infographics and other engaging content that captivates a viewer. For more, check out this infographic and learn how you too can build your marketing campaign with visual content...

This isn't really new. It is a given visual is a driver. In time this may be enhance by sound which has been an emotional driver for film, ads etc. for a very long time - but there may be something of a diversion here.

I am sitting in a cafe working thorugh online tasks. If I wasn't listening to the music here I might be on Spotify, listening to a podcast, something on my computer - so sound cues don't work so well. My phone is on silent most of the time so I can respond to it when I am in that zone.

So yes you are most likely to capture me - and others online - with visual execution and generally I get at least one laugh a day from a visual pun in my Facebook timeline - and I don't look at print (unless I am on plane).'

So it's not rocket science - visual cues are the strongest emotionally drivers online.

Visual is Key! I learned this a few years ago during an awesome class on professional presentation and Design - and it is something brands are still not understanding today - and to go on a side note for a second, what makes me so AGGREVATED is when brands share memes and horribly, butchering the meme and using them improperly - which creates such a backlash and mockery)

But I digress...To engage a consumer, a fan, a human - a very emotional being - it is essential to actually appeal to thier emotions and senses.  Great visual content will definitely stick with your followers - however becareful, horrible and distasteful visual content has the same impact, but obviously in the complete opposite way you hoped it would.
