NINETY per cent of fires in Brunei are caused by human error, according to the Station Officer Andi Karmila Waty Hj Abd Karim of the Fire and Safety Department.

Speaking to The Brunei Times after a Promotion Ceremony, the station officer said one of the most common causes of fire is food being left unattended with the stove on.
Whilst cooking, individuals may be distracted by several things such as phone calls, the TV and children playing around. She said that most accidents in the kitchen have been due to carelessness of the individual themselves.
During the month of Ramadhan, with the break-fast deadline approaching people tend to become more careless when they are rushing therefore causing various accidents that could endanger the household.
Andi Karmila Waty said that another common cause of fire is gas leaks. She warned “Do not buy the cheap and pirated equipment, especially in place of those that are supposed to protect the safety of the house.”
Individuals should certify their equipment are up to standard, such as the Gas Head Regulator, it must have the BSM logo on it to show that it follows safety standards.
The Gas Hose has a similar case; individuals must ensure that the gas hose is marked with “SS233” certifying that it follows Singapore Standard. According to the station officer, the ones that are up to standard have a safety mechanism that will minimise the amount of gas that comes out when a gas leak occurs.
Overload, overheat, short circuit or modified electrical appliance are another common cause of fire in Brunei, according to Andi Karmila Waty. She said that the overloading, overheating or short circuiting of an electrical appliance is usually due to the user themselves, they keep an appliance on for far too long or even over load a single socket thus causing a fire.
The station officer advised not to overload a single socket and take note of how much a single socket can withstand. She reminded that big electrical appliances such as refrigerators, washing machine and freezers should not share a single socket because it will cause short-circuiting or overloading.
Electrical fires are more common during the Hari Raya celebration. “During Hari Raya people are celebrating so they have all the lights, fairy lights and their air-conditioning all turned on which could cause a fire if it was left that way for an extended period”, she said.
One method of reducing human errors, according to Andi Karmila Waty is to have an advanced checklist that will list down everything one needs to do to keep safe. The checklist would remind the individual to switch off electrical appliances and also double check the stoves so that the risk of a fire breaking out will be minimised.
She also advised everyone to have firefighting equipment in their houses such as a fire extinguisher, fire blanket and a fire detector as it may not only save the life of the individual but also his children and his family.
The promotion ceremony was held for Deputy Station Officer Ajak Hj Jais and Murni Hj Misir who were both promoted to Station Officers by the Director of Fire and Rescue Yahya Hj Abdul Rahman.
The ceremony begun with a Doa Selamat before the officers were promoted yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of the Firefighter Headquarters at the Old Airport, Berakas.
