Infographic: How Social Media Impacts Purchasing Decisions... | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

Many professionals are turning to social media as a place of trust for their purchasing decisions and it’s no different for the IT industry. IT decision makers have a highly-regarded task of ensuring they recommend the best products and services for their organizations.
LinkedIn, Forrester Consulting, and Research Now zeroed in on these professionals to see how they utilize social media, including its effects on their purchasing decisions and how they engage with social.

According to Michael Weir, Head of Category Development for the Technology Industry at LinkedIn, “It’s no surprise that [IT decision makers] are heavy users of social networks. In fact, 85% have used at least one social network for business purposes. What’s surprising is that 73% have engaged with an IT vendor on a social network – underscoring the value of the channel for IT marketers. Even more revealing is the fact that social media is now a critical source of influence across the entire decision making process, not just during the initial research phase.”

Starting a blog has never been easier — but with all the social media, CMSs and techie lingo out there, it can be a tough path to navigate at first.

One of the most important things you’ll need to do as a blogger is to constantly remind yourself to stay true to your own voice. It’s easy to get caughtup in the blogging world and to lose yourself, but the best and most successful blogs are passion projects that ring true to the fired up blogger behind them.

With social media continuing to be a rapidly growing industry, many businesses and people are reaching out to different social media sites in order to promote themselves. Not only has social media become addictive to all age groups, it has also become a great place to get messages across to millions or even billions of people at once. However, this is not always a good thing, as all types of messages are able to spread across the internet like wild fire. Just like any other addictive drug, social media has to ability to grasp and change someone's life in an extremely short period of time.

10 Simple Things You Can Do Today That Will Make You Happier, Backed By Science - - The Buffer Blog

10 Simple Things You Can Do Today That Will Make You Happier, Backed By Science - - The Buffer Blog | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it
What are some simple and straight forward things to make yourself happier? We brought together the best research about what will make yourself happier:

1. Exercise more – 7 minutes might be enough

You might have seen some talk recently about the scientific 7 minute workout mentioned in The New York Times. So if you thought exercise was something you didn’t have time for, maybe you can fit it in after all.

2. Sleep more – you’ll be less sensitive to negative emotions

We know that sleep helps our bodies to recover from the day and repair themselves, and that it helps us focus and be more productive. It turns out, it’s also important for our happiness.

3. Move closer to work – a short commute is worth more than a big house

Our commute to the office can have a surprisingly powerful impact on our happiness. The fact that we tend to do this twice a day, five days a week, makes it unsurprising that its effect would build up over time and make us less and less happy.

4. Spend time with friends and family – don’t regret it on your deathbed

Staying in touch with friends and family is one of the top five regrets of the dying. If you want more evidence that it’s beneficial for you, I’ve found some research that proves it can make you happier right now.

5. Go outside – happiness is maximized at 13.9°C

The American Meteorological Society published research in 2011 that found current temperature has a bigger effect on our happiness than variables like wind speed and humidity, or even the average temperature over the course of a day. It also found that happiness is maximized at 13.9°C, so keep an eye on the weather forecast before heading outside for your 20 minutes of fresh air.

6. Help others – 100 hours a year is the magical number

One of the most counterintuitive pieces of advice I found is that to make yourself feel happier, you should help others. In fact, 100 hours per year (or two hours per week) is the optimal time we should dedicate to helping others in order to enrich our lives.

7. Practice smiling – it can alleviate pain

Smiling itself can make us feel better, but it’s more effective when we back it up with positive thoughts.

8. Plan a trip – but don’t take one

As opposed to actually taking a holiday, it seems that planning a vacation or just a break from work can improve our happiness.

9. Meditate – rewire your brain for happiness

Meditation is often touted as an important habit for improving focus, clarity and attention span, as well as helping to keep you calm.

10. Practice gratitude – increase both happiness and life satisfaction

This is a seemingly simple strategy, but I’ve personally found it to make a huge difference to my outlook. There are lots of ways to practice gratitude, from keeping a journal of things you’re grateful for, sharing three good things that happen each day with a friend or your partner, and going out of your way to show gratitude when others help you.

90 per cent fires caused by negligence

90 per cent fires caused by negligence | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

NINETY per cent of fires in Brunei are caused by human error, according to the Station Officer Andi Karmila Waty Hj Abd Karim of the Fire and Safety Department.

Reeda Malik's insight:

Speaking to The Brunei Times after a Promotion Ceremony, the station officer said one of the most common causes of fire is food being left unattended with the stove on.

Whilst cooking, individuals may be distracted by several things such as phone calls, the TV and children playing around. She said that most accidents in the kitchen have been due to carelessness of the individual themselves.

During the month of Ramadhan, with the break-fast deadline approaching people tend to become more careless when they are rushing therefore causing various accidents that could endanger the household.

Andi Karmila Waty said that another common cause of fire is gas leaks. She warned “Do not buy the cheap and pirated equipment, especially in place of those that are supposed to protect the safety of the house.”

Individuals should certify their equipment are up to standard, such as the Gas Head Regulator, it must have the BSM logo on it to show that it follows safety standards.

The Gas Hose has a similar case; individuals must ensure that the gas hose is marked with “SS233” certifying that it follows Singapore Standard. According to the station officer, the ones that are up to standard have a safety mechanism that will minimise the amount of gas that comes out when a gas leak occurs.

Overload, overheat, short circuit or modified electrical appliance are another common cause of fire in Brunei, according to Andi Karmila Waty. She said that the overloading, overheating or short circuiting of an electrical appliance is usually due to the user themselves, they keep an appliance on for far too long or even over load a single socket thus causing a fire.

The station officer advised not to overload a single socket and take note of how much a single socket can withstand. She reminded that big electrical appliances such as refrigerators, washing machine and freezers should not share a single socket because it will cause short-circuiting or overloading.

Electrical fires are more common during the Hari Raya celebration. “During Hari Raya people are celebrating so they have all the lights, fairy lights and their air-conditioning all turned on which could cause a fire if it was left that way for an extended period”, she said.

One method of reducing human errors, according to Andi Karmila Waty is to have an advanced checklist that will list down everything one needs to do to keep safe. The checklist would remind the individual to switch off electrical appliances and also double check the stoves so that the risk of a fire breaking out will be minimised.

She also advised everyone to have firefighting equipment in their houses such as a fire extinguisher, fire blanket and a fire detector as it may not only save the life of the individual but also his children and his family.

The promotion ceremony was held for Deputy Station Officer Ajak Hj Jais and Murni Hj Misir who were both promoted to Station Officers by the Director of Fire and Rescue Yahya Hj Abdul Rahman.

The ceremony begun with a Doa Selamat before the officers were promoted yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of the Firefighter Headquarters at the Old Airport, Berakas.

Six social-media skills every leader needs | McKinsey & Company | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it
Organizational social-media literacy is fast becoming a source of competitive advantage. Learn, through the lens of executives at General Electric, how you and your leaders can keep up. A McKinsey Quarterly article.
Reeda Malik's insight:

It takes guts to innovate radically in leadership and organization, for legacy systems, cultures, and attitudes are powerful forces of inertia. Fortunately, the inherent quality of social media is a powerful transformational force. Social-media engagement will confront leaders with the shortcomings of traditional organizational designs. Leaders who address these shortcomings will learn how to develop the enabling infrastructure that fosters the truly strategic use of social technologies. When organizations and their leaders embrace the call to social-media literacy, they will initiate a positive loop allowing them to capitalize on the opportunities and disruptions that come with the new connectivity of a networked society. And they will be rewarded with a new type of competitive advantage.

Guide to Social Media Advertising: Infographic | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

With social media ad revenues expected to grow to $11 billion dollars by the year 2017, social advertising has become a huge topic of interest amongst marketers.  In fact, Facebook alone is expected to make close to $1 billion from its mobile ad revenue in 2013, according to the latest estimates.

Social media is fast becoming a bigger part of the ad buying efforts of brands and agencies across the globe, and for good reason. As Salesforce Marketing Cloud VP Peter Goodman notes, “Social ads reach the audience in which you’ve invested a lot of money and time into nurturing.  You can see which audiences are engaging the most, so you can ensure that your ads are being bought correctly and you’re actually growing your fan base based on true data.”

How To Take The Perfect Nap [infographic]

How To Take The Perfect Nap [infographic] | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it
Practice makes perfect, even with naps.

Naps can be tricky. The time of day, the length, the location, and your current sleep schedule all influence the effectiveness of the nap you take. According to the infographic, the best time to take a nap is between 1:00pm-4:00pm. For most, that time is right after lunch–when it’s time to get back to work–which makes getting a little extra sleep seem impossible.

With back to back classes, and work in between until 5:00pm, when could a nap be taken? Of the four nap time lengths, 10-20 minute naps are the only feasible option. The 10-20 minute nap boosts energy and alertness–so, napping for this amount of time could give you an extra push to get through the rest of the work day.

The other best option is taking a nap for a little over an hour. This nap will allow a full trip through both light and deep sleep and helps soothe you, so you wake up refreshed without that groggy feeling.

Sleep inertia is defined as the feeling of grogginess and disorientation that can come with awakening from a deep sleep. This is the reason why many avoid taking naps. Pushing through the day when tired is preferable to that groggy feeling after a nap.

We should all get into the habit of leaning back in a quiet place. Set an alarm that gives you just enough time to get a little shut eye. Wake up and hit the ground running. Practice makes perfect, even with naps.
