The Formula Behind Facebook Engagement [infographic]

The Formula Behind Facebook Engagement [infographic] | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

A constant challenge for Internet marketers targeting Facebook has been gaining engagement. Generally brands and page admins have defined engagement as things such as likes, shares, and comments, but more importantly to gain reputation with Facebook’s algorithm.

This infographic created by SocialMouths and American Express OPEN illustrates ways to help make a Facebook page’s post a bit more popular through optimization of post elements such as short posts, the use of emoticons, the best times to post, and contest ideas...

Richard Platt's curator insight, March 6, 8:04 PM

For those who are worried about the cleanliness of airplane bathrooms (and who isn't?), Boeing is working on a solution. This week it unveiled a prototype of a self-cleaning lavatory that zaps germs with UV light.  The company says it uses far ultraviolet light to kill 99.9 percent of germs on the toilet, sink and other surfaces where bacteria can lurk. It claims three seconds of exposure to far UV light is enough to disinfect all the surfaces in the room.  Far UV is not the same wavelength as the potentially damaging UVA or UVB light that you might find in a tanning bed, for instance.   "In the prototype, we position the lights throughout the lavatory so that it floods the touch surfaces like the toilet seat, sink and countertops with the UV light once a person exits the lavatory. This sanitizing even helps eliminate odors."

IoT Raises New Legal Challenges For Business - InformationWeek

IoT Raises New Legal Challenges For Business - InformationWeek | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it
Privacy, security, and data ownership issues surrounding Internet of Things devices are creating a host of new legal questions and problems. Here's what's happening now, and what you need to know.
Reeda Malik's insight:
Internet of Things (IoT) devices represent potential points of security failures, and the data they generate or collect is raising new privacy concerns. In addition, since the IoT involves an entire value chain of hardware, software, and services, data ownership issues may arise among different parties, including the device manufacturers, software providers, service providers, end users, and others.

Retro through-and-through: Fujifilm X-Pro2 First Impressions Review

Retro through-and-through: Fujifilm X-Pro2 First Impressions Review | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

At its core, the X-Pro2 is a rangefinder style camera (and one that actually works a little like a rangefinder, thanks to some clever digital technology) that should appeal not only to the traditional rangefinder crowd, but also to enthusiasts who may be more accustomed to other styles of camera as well.

The X-Pro2 is technically the successor to Fujifiilm's original X-mount camera, the X-Pro1, however in the context of Fujifilm's camera business it's much than that. In many ways the X-Pro2 raises the bar for the entire Fujifilm line of interchangeable lens cameras, including the current top of the line X-T1. Headline features include a 24MP X-Trans sensor, a new hybrid AF system, and picture-in-picture viewfinder design borrowed from the X100, along with improved video quality.

This year begins the shift of big data away from a topic unto itself, and toward standard practices

My 3 takeaways from 2015 Gartner's research on Big Data:

1. Big Data solutions and technologies are becoming mainstream;

2. Big Data is mainly used for enhancing customer experience;

3. Business Leaders are as active as CIO/CTO in launching Big Data projects.

Organisations are overwhelmingly targeting enhanced customer experience as the primary goal of big data projects (64 percent). Process efficiency and more-targeted marketing are now tied at 47 percent. As data breaches continue to make headlines, enhanced security capabilities saw the largest increase, from 15 percent to 23 percent.

Last year, 37 percent of big data projects were initiated by the CIO, while 25 percent were initiated by business unit heads. In 2015, the roles are nearly tied, at 32 percent and 31 percent, respectively.

20 powerful reasons to use infographics |

20 powerful reasons to use infographics | | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly.

Infographics have been around for many years. In newspapers, infographics are commonly used to show the weather, as well as maps, site plans, and graphs for statistical data. Modern maps, especially route maps for transit systems, use infographic techniques to integrate a variety of information.

The increase in the number of easy-to-use digital tools has made the creation of infographics widely available to everyone. Social media sites allow for individual infographics to be shared and spread around the world.

Visual.ly and Piktochart are two companies that offer great platforms for creating infographics. We, at BarnRaisers, are big believers in the value of infographics for our clients. Here’s a recent one we did for the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) onEight Reasons Why Digital Advertising Works for Brands.

What makes infographics so effective. Infographics tell stories that are in sync with way we like to learn and retain information as human being.

Here are 20 powerful reasons to use infographics.

Social media is something that almost everyone uses and can give significant impact to people. Some people cannot differentiate what is and what is not appropriate to upload or publish hence it is good that everyone knows what and when to upload. Some people now days leave negative comments because of inappropriate posts which may lead to conflicts between people or hurting one's emotion. I feel that people should be sensitive when uploading a post so that negative impacts of social media will not worsen.

Almost everyone has social media accounts nowadays. But it stills narrow down to whether you are using it appropriately or not. Especially when the social medias are linked together, you would have to be careful on how you use it, as once the photos or status are online, everybody in the world would be able to see it.

90 per cent fires caused by negligence

90 per cent fires caused by negligence | Aspiring Outliers | Scoop.it

NINETY per cent of fires in Brunei are caused by human error, according to the Station Officer Andi Karmila Waty Hj Abd Karim of the Fire and Safety Department.

Reeda Malik's insight:

Speaking to The Brunei Times after a Promotion Ceremony, the station officer said one of the most common causes of fire is food being left unattended with the stove on.

Whilst cooking, individuals may be distracted by several things such as phone calls, the TV and children playing around. She said that most accidents in the kitchen have been due to carelessness of the individual themselves.

During the month of Ramadhan, with the break-fast deadline approaching people tend to become more careless when they are rushing therefore causing various accidents that could endanger the household.

Andi Karmila Waty said that another common cause of fire is gas leaks. She warned “Do not buy the cheap and pirated equipment, especially in place of those that are supposed to protect the safety of the house.”

Individuals should certify their equipment are up to standard, such as the Gas Head Regulator, it must have the BSM logo on it to show that it follows safety standards.

The Gas Hose has a similar case; individuals must ensure that the gas hose is marked with “SS233” certifying that it follows Singapore Standard. According to the station officer, the ones that are up to standard have a safety mechanism that will minimise the amount of gas that comes out when a gas leak occurs.

Overload, overheat, short circuit or modified electrical appliance are another common cause of fire in Brunei, according to Andi Karmila Waty. She said that the overloading, overheating or short circuiting of an electrical appliance is usually due to the user themselves, they keep an appliance on for far too long or even over load a single socket thus causing a fire.

The station officer advised not to overload a single socket and take note of how much a single socket can withstand. She reminded that big electrical appliances such as refrigerators, washing machine and freezers should not share a single socket because it will cause short-circuiting or overloading.

Electrical fires are more common during the Hari Raya celebration. “During Hari Raya people are celebrating so they have all the lights, fairy lights and their air-conditioning all turned on which could cause a fire if it was left that way for an extended period”, she said.

One method of reducing human errors, according to Andi Karmila Waty is to have an advanced checklist that will list down everything one needs to do to keep safe. The checklist would remind the individual to switch off electrical appliances and also double check the stoves so that the risk of a fire breaking out will be minimised.

She also advised everyone to have firefighting equipment in their houses such as a fire extinguisher, fire blanket and a fire detector as it may not only save the life of the individual but also his children and his family.

The promotion ceremony was held for Deputy Station Officer Ajak Hj Jais and Murni Hj Misir who were both promoted to Station Officers by the Director of Fire and Rescue Yahya Hj Abdul Rahman.

The ceremony begun with a Doa Selamat before the officers were promoted yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall of the Firefighter Headquarters at the Old Airport, Berakas.
