Over the years medical equipment has changed drastically. Incubators have, which made the process of healing the child much quicker. "The effect of increasing the humidity in incubators was examined in 62 infants of less than 30 weeks' gestation. Thirty three infants nursed in high humidity for two weeks were compared retrospectively with 29 infants from an earlier study who were nursed under plastic bubble blankets or with topical paraffin but without raised humidity. Humidification reduced skin water loss and improved maintenance of body temperature from birth, but did not delay the normal postnatal maturation of the skin."(Harpin and Rutter)

Many ask how does this process work? The reason is a little complicated. It is not a one step process. There are many steps in which the baby has to go through to be in the condition to go home. First the doctors and nurses regulate the baby's body temperature. Next they make sure that the heart rate is stable. Soon after this, the babies growth has changed drastically, so in this case observing the size of the premature baby and a healthy baby is being done.

This is an example story of a family whom could not afford to keep their child in an incubator. People do not realize how expensive this treatment is. This family did not have the money so the next option is to put the child in an ice box. This sounds terrible but it was the only thing that kept the child alive. The government later decided to help the family pay for treatment for their sickened child

The temperature and weight of the baby play a big roll in incubation. If the baby can not keep a stable temperature, this can alter the weight of the child. Once the baby can maintain a steady temperate the nurses will move the child to an open crib.

kangaroo care can begin immediately after delivery or may start after they are more stable. Even very small babies with major health issues or on a mechanical ventilator can benefit from these short sessions. Fathers can also be involved in this process. It is not only the mother that plays a part in the healing process. The father learns how to care for the baby in the most proper way by being in the room at all times watching the nurses care for the baby.
